The use of alot annoys me alot. I can allot you a parking space, but you won't fit alot of cars in it.

About 15 or so years ago I was in a tearoom in Bath. There were signs hanging from the ceiling with the message

There is a seperate smoking area downstairs.

And these were expensive looking brass signs, not paper or plastic.

The word 'absolutely' in response to a question. "Did you enjoy the film?"

The one that really winds me up is when people write ect instead of etc!!! How simple is it to write those 3 little letters in the correct order!!

I propose an explanation, as I'm positive I was guilty of this as a youngun:

    Latin isn't well known.
'etcetera' is not commonly used in full.
If you glanced at 'etc' and weren't familiar with it, you might presume it was a word, not an abbreviation.
You tried to pronounce said word, 'et-kuh' is probably the closest you'd get. 'Eckt' rolls off the tongue much more readily :D

I saw a van today that jogged my memory (I see it regularly)
Names changed to protect the guilty:

'Hert's Haberdashery' (Managed by Mr Hert? I don't think so folks)

I just spotted a delightful thread elsewhere on the forum which discusses whether leaving bad feedback on ebay can be seen as 'liable'
Not just one poster! And it's quite a short thread :wall:
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

I get riled when people use the word 'learn' when they mean 'teach', as in "that'll learn him" and "I learnt her that".

Another pet hate is when people, usually kids, say "won" in place of "beat", for example "we had a race and I won him".

And I have seen one today asking if the poster would be libel for council tax.

I do appreciate that sometimes technical/scientific terms are not too familiar to a lot of people, but as someone who worked in oncology research I did have to make sure not to correct my friend when she used to give me updates on how her father was responding to his treatment of prostrate cancer...I'm sure he wasn't permanently lying down!

Ah, comfortable reading through this thread.
The Aitch mix up has always driven me scatty, it's something I can't help correcting at every opportunity.

Hi Kaz (I think that I've just replied to you on another post!)
You might have solved a mystery for me! I have to keep correcting myself as I want to say wonder instead of wander. I'm from the North East and didn't know where I picked it up. Looking at your location is maybe a clue...my Grandmother was Cornish!:T

On reflection I wonder if it's because it's easier to text "of" than "'ve" and people have started to use it in everyday writing too?

No, it's dim people who hear "could've" and think they heard "could of" without having the sense to realise it's totally the wrong word.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
