Let me add - people who put "things" in quotes and speech 'marks' (and other invented forms of @punctuation@) that *have* no business being in <(!!quotes!!)> and ##speech## marks! No ""*business*"" at all!

There's one forum I normally enjoy and yet dread visiting (not an MSE one) because of a particular posting ***menace*** who is an especially <<egregious>> offender. Essentially it's making %%up%% an "entirely" new system of ''!punctuation!'' for ""emphasis"" (and a **<complete>** eyesore!)

Do these "people" not understand the actual '**function**' of <quotation marks> and <"speech marks">?

    *****!!!"""@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''?????

I hate reading about something quite unique or very unique. Unique means the single one of its kind therefore cannot be quite or very. People who do this are wasting their time with unnecessary words.

Another thing I have noticed recently is the creeping habit of not putting spaces after a punctuation mark. Quite often I come across posts filled with word, word errors and it annoys me so much I stop reading them. Is it really so difficult to press the space key a few extra times?

wonders how many mistakes she's made typing this

A couple of my pet hates:

decimate (used to describe destruction of a high proportion of something rather than 10%)

quartile (used when people are actually talking about a quarter or 25%)

I do smile when I hear on a train...

"This train has now reached its final destination. Please take all your belongings..."

I wonder what other type of destination there might be. Other than a final one, that is.

When I hear that, I think of the Brockwood Necropolis Railway

That infuriates me as well. Something is either unique or it isn't, there are no varying degrees of uniqueness. Adding unnecessary words into sentences seems to be on the increase unfortunately. It's as if people don't think a single word will suffice, they must add "really" or "very" or "absolutely". I saw "absolutely unique" recently. Makes me want to get the red pen out. I won't even start about apostrophes.

All the passengers on the train can all have their own destinations, but the train can only have one destination.
Destination: [noun] the place designated as the end (as of a race or journey).

    ;)

And when did they become train stations instead of railway stations?

Probably about 20 years ago when young people made their acquaintance with 'train stations' through american films and fiction, rather than by visiting and using a actual railway station near them.
