  • My elderly mum has been receiving nusiance phone calls from "Austin" at "Road Traffice Management", London. Tel: 02081334620. He had my mum's address and wanted my address, stating that I had had a car accident and was entitled to £3500 compensation. She refused to give details and hang up, but he kept repeatedly calling.

I don't know how he got her details, as I never gave them out to anyone. Moreover, the timeline for claiming has passed (over 3 years) and the case has in any case been settled and closed.

I found the following helpful (Sorry, MoneySupermarket won't let me include the links to these sites - they are all "comapanyname.org.uk"):
    1. Ofcom have some useful guides and advice on dealing with nuisance callers

    2. I reported the calls to the "Informtion Commissioner's Office"
.... who promise to do "something"??

    3. Register the number with "Telephone Preference Service"
Unfortunately, the TPS can only process complaints for calls from valid companies. If the company name provider by the nuisance caller is invalid or bogus the TPS can't do anything

    4. See your phone provider can block specific numbers.
You need to careful not to inadvertly block calls that you want to receive and you may have to pay an additional fee for this service.
BT have a service " CHoose to Refuse" where you can block up to 10 numbers but you have to pay for it.

Really! Haven't these scam artists got anything better to do?
My elderly mum was upset at receiving such calls and not knowing what to do and I was upset as I live too far away ( for work) to protect her.
How do they sleep at night knowing the misery they are causing people?

Like many others, I just had a call from "First Call" who were closing down a file about a "car accident" I had last year. News to me! This time, she had a strong Birmingham accent and hung up on me when I asked too many questions - like what accident? Was I injured? Was I hurt? How did that happen and how come I've no record of it? Came through on my mobile phone, comes up as a private number so no way of blocking it. I honestly dont know how these people can live with themselves.
    I wish I was a glow worm, a glow worm's never glum
Cos how can you be gloomy, when the sun shines out your bum? :D
  • I had a northern woman call me on my mobile. She wasn't aggressive or anything, in fact sounded as if she was new at this scamming thing! Told her I wasn't me but the mother and got motherly indignant even before she could tell me if I owed money or had some coming. She kinda gave up on me....yay.

I called the Action Fraud line today (the UK's national fraud and internet crime reporting centre 0300 123 2040) to report a call I received at my mother's house this morning. It sounded like it came from a call centre, (could be fake call centre background noise but unlikely) and fits exactly into the profile of the call described by other posters in this thread. She said her organisation wanted to reinstate my mother on the 'Accident Management Database' since one can re-join the database 3 years after an accident. My mother replied 'I haven't had an accident' and curiously (not!) the lovely lying lady on the other end of the phone immediately hung up, thwarted in her attempt to take my mother's bank details from her, (assuming earlier posts in this thread describe a typical sequence of events..)

There is a practical way to oppose these criminals. I would encourage everyone who gets calls of this nature to report then, since the lady who answered the phone at Action Fraud said the volume of evidence supplied has an effect on what level of resources go into the investigation of such events...She said she had logged lots of incidents re 'accident management database.' I would guess that this might suggest they are originating from the same call centre, but this assumption would need more investigating, of course.. But if similar scripts are used, and similar patterns of behavior like hanging up when thwarted occurs, it sounds to me like organised crime..

I would LOVE it if the police were to contact our phone supplier and get the telephone number information of these fraudsters (I tried the automated number-retrieval service, but it was 'number withheld' of course..). I get the feeling, sadly, that it's quite possible that the police are so overwhelmed with other cases that they will not even go this far in their investigation. However, if people keep reporting individual cases, like I did, the police will have more impetus to take things further, and get somewhere in stopping these malicious thieves.... Also, of course, we need to get more and more smart at how we respond to unknown callers...It's sad, but we have to withhold trust these days.. it's the down-side of all this technology at our fingertips...

I too had a call from these people about 20 minutes ago. Same guff about having been told by Road Traffic Accident Management of an accident I had in the last three years that wasn't my fault and they could get compensation for me. When I asked the guy gave their address as 170 Garratt Lane, SW London. I couldn't recall ever having had an accident of any sort so I asked him lots of questions about it - he said I'd been hit on the side at a roundabout but he couldn't disclose the date because of the data protection rules! Eventually he got bored with my questions and put the phone down.

I also received a call from Road Accident Management. Sadly the "first" Indian guy was rude (telling me "you not listening" when I've asked simple question wanting to find out who's calling me) and knew I had a road incident in the past 3 years. He then transferred our call to his senior, who in fact sounded like the first one and I'm 99% sure I spoke with the same person (but being more polite)... He said his name is Asi Faith and I can reach him on 01618184976...
Since I couldn't give him any information regarding the incident (simply didn't remember), he saidhe'll ring me back next day (good luck mate, like I'm going to answer...).
Out of curiosity I rang the number expecting to hear a professional response, but instead it was a simple, clear and quiet "hello" from, I believe the same guy... (Note, 5 minutes earlier I could hear a busy, noisy background). Suspicious. ..

  • Just took a call from an outfit describing themselves as "UK Claims" reckoning to be able to get you your banking charges back. They refused to give full company details/address when repeatedly challenged
so its probably dodgy (calling line ID came up as 0123) and I put the phone down on them.

This site is the only help anyone needs!

    Midge.

Just had a call from company by this name. The caller refused to give a telephone number but 1471 revealed telephone number as 02036349971.
They were claiming they could get compensation for an injury accident that I had in the last 3 months. To the best of my knowledge, I have not had an injury related to work or travel in the last 20 years!
My number is ex-directory and TPS active.
    Watch out!

I was contacted by somebody from UK Claims saying we were entitle to some compensation money for an accident we had last year. He had a heavy indian accent with the name of Hassan Ali. He asked me lots of questions and said the claims officer will call me in 3 days time to comfirm everything and after that SOMEBODY WILL COME TO OUR HOUSE TO GET ALL THE PAPERS SIGNED. I felt this was kind of dodgy and i started to question him, asking him his name, company's address, phone number, company's website which he gave me.
Company name: uk claim, address: 170 Garrats lane, Dans street, Wandsworth, SL18 4DP(doesn't exist too). Phone 02071 938974. I called back the number few minutes later to verify, the receptionist sounded very dodgy - could not even speak properly. I asked for the manager who presented himself as Andy Cooper. He pretended to be American but he had an indian accent. Has anyone encountered a similar recently? thanks
They are still playing the same game, but from a different base. They now claim to be in "East London" and would not give me their telephone number but 1471 revealed it as 02036349971.
The last accident injury I had was over 20 years ago!

As an update, out of curiosity I tried calling the number. An American(?) voice told me the number was "not in service". Could this be because I had told the caller that i was going to call the ICO?

I'm pretty sure none of the posters who have been quoted in the last few posts will reply or even read the replies to them. Each one was last active in 2010 and haven't posted since.
  • A colleague has just had a call from someone claiming to be from Money Saving Expert (!) telling them that they were due thousands in bank charges but that they needed to pay £100 delivery charge first. The number given was 01618186104. Anyone else received a call like this? A bit cheeky that they're using MSE!
