I too received a call today from a company saying that they are uk claims and working on behalf of the government and have money to pay back to customers. They had my name, address and card number. They had the first four digits of my security number and wanted me to verify the last three. I refused and the woman tried telling me that this is just a customer verification number and that it is not a problem. I was talking to an Eastern eurpean woman (thick accent) calling her self Rachel Morgan. I insisted on the company address and to speak to her supervisor. He told me his name was Sam Cooper (thick Asian accent) and became very aggressive in his manner screaming down the phone at me. I put the phone on loud speaker so my husband could hear the carry on. He screamed the address and I managed to get some of it as Lesley street, Sussex. I had to put the phone down on his screaming! Did 1471 - contact number came up as 0202 456 8636 - but is a blocked number. Did a quick seach - no company of this name in Lesley St, Eastbourne. What can be legally done about these preditors?

That is a common scam and warned about on the MoJ pages. THre is no company working on behalf of the Govt.

Sounds like card has been copied somewhere. I suggest you phone your card provider and tell them this and ask for a replacement card.

Nothing. Just never act on a cold call as you will avoid scams and issues that way.

  • I have had several calls from 'The UK claims & finance dept.'They always ask how I would like my refunded bank charges paid to me and they have personal information about me and my debit card(not from me).I have told them I have reported them,to no avail, they still keep calling. Now I just tell them I will get my card to verify the details then leave them hanging on the phone until they get fed up and eventually hang up.
Some one must be able to put a stop to them somehow,it must pay for them or they wouldn't keep calling people.Don't ever give bank details over the phone to anyone .

Have you read any of the advice already offered before you bumped this thread that was otherwise last posted in 2 months ago?
... and was actually started 3 years ago?
  • This scam has now resurrected in 2014.
I have had about 12 (unsolicited) calls telling me that I can claim through them for a "recent accident" - which does not exist.
The number calling is 0121 732 9971. Probably above a chip shop in Birmingham.
  • Yep, had a similar call today from Road Traffic Accident Investigation Bureau or something similar (I forget) wanting to discuss a minor road accident I'd had last year (no such accident happened).
The man was very chirpy and knew my first name which he used straight away, impertinently . He had an Indian accent.
Anyway, I gave him the brush-off politely, and he didn't ring back. 1471 gave number unavailable. My own number is permanently number withheld, and ex-directory also, so I'm not too thrilled to be getting such calls.
    stinker..
  • I have just had a call from an Asian guy who said that my bank had made illegal charges for services that are free and that he would like to fill in a claim form for me. He wanted my bank name and sort code - fairly low level so I gave him them. Then he wanted by bank account number...I said "No" he put me through to his supervisor. The supervisor said this information is on all cheques so isn't a security risk to provide it. I am an information security consultant and thought differently! I said that the Solicitors Regulation Authority know about scams such as these and that I would like him to send me the forms in the post. He went on a bit and I asked where the Claims Direct head office is...he gave an address in London. Claims Direct are based in Manchester - I told him that and he hung up.
    The end...good fun though.

I had a call today - Indian guy, similarly chirpy and called me by my first name, knew my address and postcode too, although at no point did I actually confirm that he was talking to who he thought he was! He was adamant that someone at this address had been involved in an accident and said that the information came from the UK National Survey. I asked who he worked for and he said UK Claims Online but he was clearly overseas as he said at one point "we are aware over here.......". When I asked him if "over here" was India he said no, Wandsworth! The phone number on the caller ID was 00440625570772 .
