Lesley, would this be helpful? It's linked to from the NHS website

    http://www.nutrition.org.uk/attachments/053_Micronutrient%20DRVs.pdf

    http://www.nutrition.org.uk/nutritionscience/nutrients/fat?start=3

There are more pages with calorie intake info etc. I can try to link them if you like

Also has info like this "The Reference Nutrient Intake (RNI) is set at 0.75g of protein per kilogram bodyweight per day for adults." (for protein)

"At least half the energy in our diets should come from carbohydrate, mostly as starchy carbohydrates"

"he recommended average intake [of fibre] for adults is 18g per day."

that sounds like something I can use, thanks. Haven't got time right now, but I'll have a look later

it's so annoying, I put the figs in the s'sheet, but not where I got them from

Well, that's what five a day is about, really, isn't it ? The initiative is there in order to increase the chances of an average family achieving 100% RDA of their essential vitamins and minerals, because majority of people will not ever sit down and work out their RDAs and how to get them. If someone else has done this for them, where's the problem ?
Exactly - five a day is a rough rule of thumb to ensure people are getting enough without having to actually do nutritional analysis.

Incidentally I don't believe five a day is essential either but never mentioned it as it didn't seem relevent for me to mention it.

    hi all
am writing up the nutrition stuff in a simple way to help Shirl's believe in the healthiness of what is offered.

In the spreadsheet, I have put on the top

    protein 10-35%
    fat 20-35%
sat fat - up to 7%
    carb 45-65%

as a way of reminding me what the rec amounts were. Now I can't flippin' find where I got that from. It was a govt site of some kind, and I want to quote it. I have searched for ages, and have searched through the threads, and simply can't find it.

    anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried using the advanced tools in google and searching for the exact wording, you can also search by acedemic research etc.
    Hope that helps.

Murrell, tamarind is quite a fruity flavour and has a little bit of a sweet and sour taste.

Not ignoring other posts, just had time for a quick skim read whilst waiting for electrician. Will be back for a proper read this evening

Sounds like I need to give it a try then. Do you buy the ones in the solid blocks that are about 30p I think (could be wrong). I have looked at them because of the price, but shyed away from it.

But I think I might be thinking more along the lines of Mr Weezl and Twinkle on this one and I think it has a very niche appeal. I think trying to take shirley from point A to point Y in one move might be doing it a bit too quickly. You were very dedicated to live on 50p a day I'm not sure that most people would be that committed. (said with love)
But some of the commitment involved is in working everything out so if it is all worked out more people will do it because all the paperwork so to speak has been done already.

thank you amber :) nice to see you.

I'll certainly be doing my research about powerhouse fruit and veg :)
I wonder if "The Worlds Healthiest Foods" might be a useful starting point? There's more detail on the website but I think they've tried to find the highest nutritional value things which are cheaply available on a worldwide basis.

very important post please don't skip!

I notice that avocet's introduction is (rightly) a huge part of making the hardcore month ok.

Avocet was very clear that anyone landing on those pages MUST come via the introduction page.

This will not be possible for technical reasons.

brief example: say in the hardcore planner somewhere is written the phrase, 'what can I do with 40 kilos of spuds?' (just thinking of something unlikely to be on lots of websites!)

joe public person has acquired 40 kilos of spuds off his farmer mate, and just happens to type exactly the phrase 'what can I do with 40 kilos of spuds?' into google.

guess what page google will offer him?

hardcore planner page, but not avocets intro.

there are some work-rounds to this, but they damage some other things that dad and I have worked hard to create, so I'm reluctant to go that route.

How much of a deal-breaker is it for people if avocet's rule that the intro page MUST be landed on first can't be followed?
Someone else has already said it but having a link to the introduction on each "hardcore" page would be sufficient in my opinion.

I know I go way over my vitamin A just with my morning fruit smoothie. It's why i don't take a multivitamin - I think i'd get vitamin A poisoning!
Vitamin A comes in two forms: retinol and beta-carotene. If you have too much retinol (which I think is the form you get in supplements, animal products and fortified foods) it can have toxic effects but this does not apply to beta-carotene (the form it comes as in plant products). (Too much beta-carotene will turn you yellow but isn't thought to have any harmful effects.)
