But as this is something you feel so strongly about.... Isn't it better to try and educate people away from what you feel might be indoctrination rather than go off in a huff because they disagree with you ? We are all open-minded enough here, I think, to listen to another's point of view and take onboard their comments, even if we do not come over to their point of view.

Doh! Caught out trying to do a flounce! OK, I'll try to explain why I feel the way I do, and stay around. To be fair, it was more that I've only contributed minimally so far anyway, and don't want to cause another (insert noun here)-Gate, and spoil the hard work this has taken for everyone.

that just because only Shirley believes she needs to diet, she'd the only one who actually needs to! She's more likely NOT to need to, in fact, compared to her Bob, whoever he is.
Ah right! No that wasn't my assumption, so I didn't intend to sound as though it was. Rather if she wants to, I don't want the others to have to. Irrespective of whether it is necessary.
Which is why I strongly believe you SHOULD NOT get involved in this, and should stick to providing balanced nutritional advice and teaching for EVERYONE
    ok, thanks.

    Just a quick one:

I'm not very good at saying what I am good at IYSWIM. I have done the advanced training on excel & word, but as mostly only actually need to use basic functions am only confident in these. I got an above average appraisal this year & was told I was good at organising (obviously my manager has not seen my home!) My job involves analysing large amounts of data, including medical & legal, researching this further, and writing reports/letters etc. based on this information in a low jargon/user friendly way.

At the moment I am on sick leave due to problems with discs in my neck. But even when working full time I work from home 2-3 days a week, which gives a lot of flexibility. But due to disc problem it is better to do short bursts. I won't offer to help unless I am sure to follow through, as I alway meet my commitments!

Re the stats, when Weezl posted them I assumed that those visiting loads were probably mostly us on here. I don't know how many times I visit a day, but it is probably quite a few times if I am trying to respond to a request for help. For example, computer may go off if going out & then go back to it later. Or the poor old thing is a bit sensitive/moody & sometimes kicks me out, or we get a power surge or cut, even a tiny one will turn the computer off.

Re the dieting, do you know how hard it is to put weight on! LOL. My Mum is exactly in the middle of the ideal weight, but my Dad is seriously over. It frustrates Mum to try & reduce his intake (he does exercise BTW), as she writes the meal plans, but he will, for example, eat the soup for lunch, and then go & fix himself a sandwich straight after.

This site is not designed to provide a diet plan. So if anything is to be said about weight loss I would be inclined to keep it very general & just say that we know some people may wish to lose weight & can reduce oil or sugar in these recipes, which will reduce calories. But not get bogged down into being too specific.

BTW DD loved her day at her new school & has made me a wooden spatula!

It is every Shirley's right to hate her body if she wants to, and to treat it as she wishes, to get engaged in the endless cycle (of which you are aware) of dieting, loss, regain, and misery (often caused by muscle loss due to very low calorie/no exercise plans); I would not wish to be involved in a project which suggested that this was either normal, or to be expected, which catering to dieter would automatically do.

I want to come back to this when I have time to address it properly :) I'm gonna say night-night now though, and please no one have a scrap while I'm not about :D

Amber, some people choose to diet for medical health reasons not because they hate their body. I think it's a bit unfair to say that dieting is solely related to that which is what your post above suggests to me. I am sorry if I have read this wrong and you are fully entitled to your opinion. I have to say that I think the post which you deleted was a bit unfair and I am glad you have deleted it.

I don't think that any of us are assuming that only shirley believes she needs to diet or that only shirley actually needs to if indeed any member of our fictional family wants or needs to diet. Whilst we have been doing this project we have put ourselves in shirley and bob's places and we are all very different. The people on the thread who were interested in what the weight watchers points might be or those (including myself) who expressed concern at the amount of oil in things were all women that's not to say that men might not share our thoughts or concerns or that we assume that because we are women that all women will have the same queries that we do.

We are all shirley's and as it is the shirley's who are having the discussion it's easy to talk in terms of shirley, I don't identify with bob because I'm not bob but as you can see from my earlier post I do have concerns that my bob might possible benefit from losing a little weight because he is in the overweight category medically.

Weezl has tried to provide a balanced diet with the right amount of fats and calories for average shirley and bob. We are not all average. Some of us may need to gain weight and some of us may need to lose it or may want to lose it. It's up to individual choice. What we are trying to work out is how to express to our readership how they can cater for themselves and adjust the plan if they are not shirley and bob average.

ETA: Amber, I'm glad you are going to stick around.

Amber, i think u've misunderstood a bit. I was only talking about shirley watching her calories just as a colloquial reference, but of course it could be bob as well! I never really meant to suggest that the site should encourage anyone to diet or offer dieting advice. However, i feel like it's not an unreasonable angle to cover - much like how the planners combat non negotiables like meat or fresh fruit. Would it help to see "weight loss" as my non negotiable? Or not even necessarily weight loss per se, but just a slightly lower calorie requirement. I don't think gender enters into at all, except for the scientific fact that the average man requires less calories than an average man, so in order to eat appropriately, shirley needs something a bit beyond 'eat less cake' (in MY opinion), but similarly for the kids as well!

Not sure this pst is helpful at all other than weezl may be being accused of something to which she didn't instigate...and we're only having theoretical dscussions at this stage rather than implementing fundamental changes in the website.

mmmm doughnuts, I'd love to try the doughnuts but have a fear of deep fat frying (fire related)

on a separate note someone has found us on facebook and is concerned about the five a day in some of the days on the menu planner. I have asked them to say which days so that we can address this.
