I don't think we've decided what to present about weightloss yet, more at the just discussing it phase :)
Sorry I knew that - it was my way of suggesting it not be gender specific.

yes, good point. It's hard to write the site in a male and female way I'm noticing. For example, because lots of the quotes from the batch day guide are from women who do the cooking, thir language sometimes presupposes the woman will cook it all.

And yet on our thread this isn't true, and Mr arty is much more the cook (ie of the bread) for example.

I personally don't think of it primarily being a portion sizing issue.

Sadly I do think dieting encourages weight gain over the years as the yo-yo pattern is to put on more than you lost. So I think women are more prone to this type since they are the ones who have slightly more societal pressure to diet.
I see. Although I do find it hard to understand why people feel pressure but maybe that's because I've almost always been underweight so am more likely to notice negativity about being thin.

    From :http://www.annecollins.com/obesity/uk-obesity-statistics.htm
" About 46% of men in England and 32% of women are overweight (a body mass index of 25-30 kg/m2), and an additional 17% of men and 21% of women are obese (a body mass index of more than 30 kg/m2 ).."

Which gives us 63% of men higher than "ideal" and "only" 53% of women. However, women are over represented in surveys asking if people are "dieting" or "concerned about their weight" by a fairly consistent 9:1 ratio!

This is, to put it mildly, statistically disproportionate. I don't want to buy into the culture that promotes this discrepancy. that's why I asked the question, and why it concerns me.

    eta govt. stats from http://www.ic.nhs.uk/statistics-and-data-collections/health-and-lifestyles/obesity/statistics-on-obesity-physical-activity-and-diet-england-2006

give 65% of men v. 55%of women, but the discrepancy remains roughly the same...

    sure, that sounds good.

I'm just not seeing how we're promoting the discrepancy amber.

But I am up for you saying, because I agree that wouldn't be right.

How do you not see yourself as promoting it when you've just been the INSTIGATOR of a several page discussion on how to cut a woman's food whilst ensuring her "poor hubby" doesn't starve!

Well...that's how it reads to me, anyway...
In context, I have been responding to the question what if shirley is dieting.

Perhaps I am too literal, but I just assumed that meant and Bob Jenny and Jason aren't.

I don't personally want any of them to diet.

Apologies for any offence. I am simply asking how to publish advice for a family where one person needs to diet and the others don't.

  • weezl - the whole approach of "how can we cut Shirl's food whilst feeding Bob PLENTY?" has horrid echoes of countless women through the ages starving themselves to keep the men and children fed. The stats show it is a fallacy; why continue it?
Women encouraged to form a healthy relationship with their food (including the "learning to fish" subsistence stuff you're so good at) are unlikely to regularly overeat anyway, so why even mention it? Why not continue to encourage healthier lifestyles, for the whole family, rather than donning these blinkered approaches to women's food?

ok amber. Just didn't want to lose shirl/bob if (s)he wants to diet, but feels there's lots of fat in the planner.

    Does that make sense?

I do not want to encourage her/him to diet. Just that if (s)he wants to, I can't stop her and I dont want to lose her/him

  • I'm sorry everyone. Not unusually, my viewpoint is enough different to your "average" woman that I'm being an impediment to your discussion.
I think I'd better quit reading this thread now. i will continue to look at/adapt things from the site until your "diet" advice is added, and will cache the most useful recipes.

Again, I apologise if anyone feels i've been harsh.
