This would ideally be best tackled in schools, with home ec being completely rebranded as boy-friendly, made compulsory, and having a focus on real staple foods (bread) rather than footling around with cupcakes and frosting (at least until later once the basics are grasped) it should also be given a nutritional edge and real economic sense too.

But I rather suspect this would only actually happen in the homes of very non-mainstream home schoolers, sadly.

You know I remember making bread in school and making an apple crumble. I also remember having a challenge in 6th form to make a meal for 4 on a budget... That is all I remember from cooking at school though. I think you are right that it needs to change and that is why I think you need to be prepared to make your cause pretty political too. There are a lot of people who would disagree with what you are doing because it goes against things that make money (e.g. would Mr A's want you to recommend them as the cheapest, of course, would Mr M's feel you shouldn't be telling people one supermarket over another, probably!). Though I know you have no affiliation with a brand, someone coming along may assume you do.

Keep on going Weezl, we'll have you on the couch with Holly and Phillip soon, blowing some nutritional myths out of the water and cooking up a healthy eggshell soup :)

if we remove all the snack parts of the houmous that reduces the bread slice shortfall drastically

    We currently have
    hummus x 2 lunches 300g chickpeas
roasted onion hummus x 1 lunch 100g chickpeas
    tomato hummus x 1 lunch 200g chickpeas
red pepper hummus x 1 lunch 100g chickpeas

and a bread slice shortfall/excess of 0 ta da

the chick pea qty's look about right, except maybe the tomato one might result in thick hummus in the sandwiches
this is with 4 slices of bread each per lunch, maybe they could have the tomato on 4 separate slices of toast?

PS have pinged it over in case you want to have a look

anyway, back to B12- dare we lose the marmite?

It can be dangerous under rare conditions to have insufficient even in the presence of dietary folate.

so that says, keep the marmite!

But as we've already seen, NO-ONE at all is going to follow this to the letter! And the weirder we make it (so as to compensate for not losing the marmite) the even less likely we are to achieve compliance. (which isn't even our marker of success as folk keep reminding me!)

    Aaaaargh, what to do?

Personally I would loose it. You cant cater for people with medical conditions/rare things in their body.

Totally! Do you know who funded the research which found that 8 out of 10 toddlers don't get enough iron? (They use it in their adverts.)

I had it in mind that there was a plan to introduce compulsory cooking lessons soon, as it affects DD who starts at secondary school this September. And here is the confirmation:

What kind of figures are we talking about?

And is there a disclaimer about pregnancy requirements already?

And of fortified infant cereal. Apparently the study found that the toddlers who weren't defiecient were the ones who are consuming those things.

But I am puzzled because by my recent calculations (which I was doing for my benefit) Alice easily gets enough without fortified anything.
