Weezl and friends Phase 2 -giving it a whirl for Shirl! Testing meal plan for a month

Oh, and Weezl, I have a couple of questions for you:
1) Do you believe that the planners are healthy ?
2) How long did it take you to research the info and acquire sufficient nutritional knowledge to be able to create a healthy eating plan ?0 -
Hippeechiq, if you are about - a few pages back you were talking about having a go at baking bread, and that prompted me to dig out my recipe for best bread rolls ever, and I mean that. Sadly, they are a bit out of reach of our ladies' budget (avert your eyes, Shirl and Kitty !) but if you are hoping to tempt a reluctant eater, this is definitely worth a shot.
Dinner Milk Rolls
(makes 12)
750g bread flour
2tsp salt
25g butter
2 tsp fast action dried yeast
450ml lukewarm milk (I use powdered made up)
extra cold milk, to glaze
salt flakes or sesame seeds to garnish
Mix salt into the flour, rub in the butter (if it's fridge-cold, the easiest way to do this is to dip the lump into the flour then grate it), mix in the yeast.
Carefully add milk, mixing with a woodes spoon, until you have a firm dough (you might not need all of the milk). Turn dough out of the bowl on to a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. If it starts sticking, keep dusting with flour until smooth and elastic.
Place in a greased bowl, cover and leave to rise for 40-45 min.
Turn out of the bowl, punch down and knead again, the divide into 12 pieces. Preheat oven to 220C/ 200 fan.
Roll some of the pieces into rolls then place on an oiled baking sheet and slash couple of times with a knife. Roll other pieces into a sausage, then roll up into a spiral. Remaining pieces roll into a long sausage, then cut each sausage into three parts, join parts at the top and plait together. Place all on the greased baking sheet, glaze tops with the extra milk, sprinkle with salt flakes or seeds, and bake for 12 minutes.
They are ever so pretty, and the taste is to die for0 -
I made the savoury bites today. I had them with a little pot of bbq sauce, they were really yummy, much recommended!0

As for the person who'd rather eat their own kneecaps, well, it's an option, isn't it ? The only thing that concerns me about it is that it is of necessity rather a short-term menu plan. Not dissing the 'caps, no - make a lovely jelly-topped stock that'll feed a family of four for days on end, no doubt - but once that is all eaten up, they'll find it rather hard to catch the remaining members of the family to get hold of their kneecaps, won't they ?
Sometimes people just do not think things through properly.
Just popping out of lurkydom to say :T:T:T Go Allegra!0 -
Have just made the sweetcorn fritters from the 'vegan recipes'
Halved the recipe to make 8 and they are just so moreish. Was browsing Murrells site, saw the link to the vegan recipes from weezl and rustled them up in about 10 minutes! So so easy to make
Took a photo before they all disappeared, here's a few of them
If photo's aren't allowed I'll delete it.
Really are worth making.

Hi Arty glad you had a good time, With you on the sleep front but mine is for work not for pleasure. Been a busy day today with posts. Weezl you need to stop taking things so personally or you will lose all pleasure in trying to help Shirl. You know what you have put together is a good, well balanced, tasty and cheap menu and that from the testers it is a doable planner that obviously works or we wouldnt all still be here willing to go through it again for Kitty. There are always people in this world who cant bear to see others do well or achieve something they wanted to do but didnt get round to doing so, instead of hiding their jealousy they would rather lash out. If people have a genuine question/query then thats fine we can help but if they just want to moan because they can then stuff them.
Sorry ranting on a bit there blame sleep deprivation been up since 5pm yesterday.
Hope tomorrow is a better day someone mentioned sunshine earlier WHERE!!!!!!!! is has been raining and dreich here all weekend and quite cool and thats saying something from a hardy Scot.
Only 16 recipes to go thats great and seems to be moving on much quicker than Shirls planner sounds like fun and hope to try some (not ones with peppers for me or beans for ex) but will be nice to have something else to add to my repetoire.
Ok heading to bed soon start work tomorrow at 0830 til 730pm so catch up with you all after that. Take care xxx
PS Dizzy love the pics and i am sure Arty will be glad to see more photos, she can add them to her collection as she is partial to pics.0 -
Hi all
Sorry I've been so quiet for a few days(?) - have had personal *stuff* (poooo! boooo!), but I'm still around!
*goes to catch up*0 -
I know I'm not the best at communicating thoughts and emotions in print so please bear this in mind and remember that I love your site and think the concept is brilliant and well worth my time and effort (small as it is).If the new recipes aren't linked to a plan, then people will be able to say that it is not healthy.
And then Shirley might not use it
This is quite easy to prevent by writing brief descriptions of the plans pointing out that each plan as a whole is healthy and that following a plan in part or substituting other dishes or ingredients for those in the plan would result in users having different (and possibly less healthy) levels of some nutrients and/or spending more. I could have a crack at writing this if you wish?
As for the recipes themselves, no website or cookery book offers exclusively healthy dishes and no one expects them to! You could add the complete nutritional breakdown of each dish at the end of the recipe if it bothers you that much.I was upset that someone who'd never tried our carbonara referred to it as a 'disgusting rendition' of a meal. I think their quarrel was with the name of your dish rather than the taste. If you'd done a Delia and called it "cheats carbonara" I doubt you would have had that response!
I was hurt when someone said they'd rather eat their own kneecaps than live like that (me) wasn't it "elbow"? That poster is a well established member of DT with a rep to protectshe is a founder member of the "spending the kids inheritance" thread. I'm absolutely certain it never crossed her mind that you might read her comment and sure that she would be mortified to know that it had hurt you.
I was hurt when someone said they'd read my threads and didn't feel they were healthy at all. I doubt if a nutritionist would find her diet healthy - you know that you, AM, Fergie and Kester are all healthy.... the proof of the pudding....
I feel sad about numerous other things that have been written, but this isn't a plea for sympathy. It's just how it is. I feel sad that you feel like this. You have "given birth" to this site and as such, it is natural that you take comments to heart. I sooo wish you didn't, but then you wouldn't be you, would you?
I'm sure you're right that I take it in more than I should. I know that's true about me. good, that's half the battle, knowing that you are vulnerable is halfway to protecting yourself.
If I am going to have a team here which does offer me in part what I need to keep going then I feel it will also have to be a place where I can get some reassurance when I read some of those things. I hope we have provided that!
I don't do it everytime, I have a tolerance for about 10 comments before I get a bit overwhelmedIf people like this idea, then Morag, I wonder how you'd feel about adding that to your excellent changes to the FAQs page? Will you have a think about the wording?
I will do this with pleasure and post a link when it's done.Murphy was an optimist!!!0 -
