when my girls were taking lunches to school, one of their favourites was cheese and carrot. You can use a small amount of grated cheese, at least twice as much grated carrot and just enough mayo to moisten it, or leave out the mayo and use butter etc on the bread, or even no spread or mayo. I sometimes have it now with a bit of grainy mustard mixed in, sometimes with mayo as well, sometimes not

they also loved hummus with lots of grated carrot in a sandwich too

all helps the expensive stuff go further!

Lesley - thanks. Another brilliant idea. They love grated carrot. I would never have thought of mixing it with cheese in a sandwich. I'll try this one too.

  • Hello everyone,
I know this doesn't seem like a big deal to most, but, I HAVE FOUND THE MARMITE!!!!! I have spent 3 weeks searching the supermarket for it, having run out. They must have been out too, as it's now turned up next to the dried yeast ( they only do one small size of marmite).

3 weeks with no marmite, it's been hell!

Having rice and peas tonight with jerk chicken tonight as dd is doing a huge Jamaica project, she did ask for curried goat, but we negotiated to jerk chicken as I think they're more likely to actually eat that :D.

We had the saag aloo yesterday. I made a half quantity and the only change I made was to use rocket in place of spinach because the garden is full of it. We both liked it very much and for taste would rate it a 10. Our only reservation was having it without anything else. I'm sure we'd get used to it, but when I make it again, I'd be very tempted to make a bit less and serve with either rice or naan bread. I used new potatoes which were a bit waxy, but I think it would be better with a more floury variety as they would absorb the flavours better.

I'd like to give the new less nutty nut loaf a test, and will try to fit it in one evening next week.

I'm away over the weekend, so look forward to catching up with everyone on Monday. Hope you all have a good one.

we had the sag aloo last night as well, although we had it as an accompaniment with lamb curry and onion rice.

I'd had a big tin of spinach in the cupboard for ages, so used that, but what a brilliant sub to use rocket, got lots in the garden so can't wait to give that a go.

I used waxy spuds too as I had bagged 6 x 1 kg bags of jersey royals reduced right down to 20p in the CoOp, so used one of those.

flavour was good and I'll def make it again, but I would have it with something else. The amount in the pan would make 4 extremely large portions, so you certainly wouldn't be left hungry. If I was Shirley I would love the extravagance of the amount

going to try the new nut loaf tonight. Will write up how I do it as we haven't got a method yet

    Hi folks,
I have not been on here as my internet has taken a battering and being able to do anything has been very difficult. I keep saying that I wished I had printed up the recipes as last night I was trying to remember how to make risotto using the website recipe. I guessed and it came out really good. Have had a look today and it was identical so my memory is better than I thought.

My cheese has been lasting loads longer since I broke my grating attachment and chopped it into small pieces in the food processor. The boys don't use it for sandwiches like that! A huge result for me as the cheese monsters are my greatest expense.

A request from my daughter and I apologise if it has already been done but can we have a link to the weekly shopping list, please? She and DSIL have the tiniest freezer and want to shop weekly whilst following the plan. There must be a lot more people like them who want to follow the plan. It might link in with the emergency shopping list. And weezl I am not trying to make more work for you, a link that is obvious on page two here would be good:)

weezl,I loved the story of your little one eating out in the garden!

I have been told that I am wheat intolerant by my GP. That is rubbish for me continuing to eat the meals from plan1 but I am still cooking for all the boys, current count four of them. I have been making my own chick pea flour and using it to make pancakes etc.

Hippeeechiq, An idea for you to have a ponder on.

Of all the recipe testers to date, my feeling is that you are one of the most rigorous and exact at the level of I sense you are not one to add in a little of this that and the other, or to do what arty and I do, like missing out the blind baking or somesuch.

(this is not to say a bad thing about the other testers BTW!)

I appreciate you had a frustrating time with the recipe, and I'm very sorry about that, but rather than go off in a huff thinking 'oh well all the recipes must be rubbish' you have bothered to come back and say, which I really value.:)

So I''m wondering if you'd be willing to apply your rigorous testing to any of our other recipes?

Would that appeal to you? we can then make them better.

I'm concerned that the editing of the site needs to be done in a logical order, else we'll be doubling up on some folk's workload, like the editors who are looking out for typos and the like, so we'll have to have a think about the right approach.

In short, thanks for being a rigorous tester, and let's see if we can use your skills to make shirley's tool better :)

Sorry I can't seem to be able to just quote a small piece of this. But I thought I should say that DS3 made the onion tart and left it to bake blind for over half an hour. I was really worried it would be burnt but it wasn't. I think it is a fairly robust recipe that can cope with 'slight' variations. It didn't taste burnt at all.

hello all, just back from hols :)

We had a fabulous time, which I wasn't expecting, so I'm happy about that.

Poohbear, here is the link to kezlou's breakdown of the shopping list into weeks, but as she wisely points out, it's a work in progress, so do please say to DD that we're sorry for any mistakes and would value her feedback to make it even better :) I've linked to it from post number 3 too :)

    Thanks, she has found it:)

Your carrot cake was mentioned in a blog of a guy walking from Lands End to John o' Groats. It was mentioned as my carrot cake but I thought you would like to know. It travels well in a plastic tub!

I have made pancakes with rice flour and they are good too.
Also you can make flatbreads from lots of different flours.
