Morning FW I hope that you are feeling less pain and truly rested this morning. I am pondering your question on morality and I second what KC says as a start. I love reading your diary because you truly make me work my brain. This I have missed for much of my adult life. Between you and Mr C I have never questioned things so much and thought so deeply. My brain hurts :) in a good way.

My brain has shut down. I am exhausted and am taking the day off work so i can relate to all of this. The MSE gang are popping along later so I will tidy up in a bit. I do love it when you guys debate but my brain is popcorn due to rubbish blood sugars so I won't join in today. Will rest. Meet Aesop for the first time tomorrow and maybe Mr William if he is free.

Yesterday I read that we should look after what we have – this ultimately saves money, and loads of it. One aspect of this is looking after our bodies – being fit is not a vanity but a frugality matter. Getting and keeping fit can save a wagon load of money in doctor’s fees (ah, well, we still have the NHS but I am not convinced this is going to be able to withstand the onslaught of our government for long), medication, missed working days etc.

Today the main thing I have done is to go to the gym; and yes, I am feeling still slightly shaken form yesterday but the truth is that I am not eating my frogs; that today I have been keeping busy rather than keeping productive. This will have to be corrected during the rest of the afternoon and certainly there is plenty of time between now and 19.00 when we are going to see some friends.

LB is gone away for the weekend. Several years back the school he goes to got a new Head Master; his position is that if children are not exposed to controlled risk they never learn how to deal with risk. This is a belief difficult to oppose! Ever since, once a year the school has been taking children away for the weekend – to local places where they do activities, have great educational time and engage in team building with their classmates and the members of staff. This is the third year LB goes to one of these but every time he goes out of the door with his rucksack and his bright face my breath stops and my heart contracts.

Also today history was made! OH and I have been thinking and talking about going to the theatre again (or to something that is not a quick cinema outing) for a long time; in fact each of us had is on our last 98 day challenge and this was one of the points on which we both failed. But today we booked tickets and tomorrow we are off to see Yes, Prime Minister. And we are so worth it!

Now it is time for some frog eating and getting my frogs in line. I am going to eat the ugliest and biggest one but with salt and vinegar (the thoughts about how far this one will get me when completed).

SW, watch the sugars and rest. Remember, you are your most valuable asset.

    Have fun with your friends.

Interesting on morality - yes, I think there are some things that are absolutely wrong. Clitoridectomy, for instance. I don't often get involved in discussions about morality, but that one popped into my head straight away - it still happens, and its not okay that it happens.

    .

i agree with you here kc it is totally wrong and i cannot understand why it is still carried out .... however other people think it is right and acceptable ....and if we expect our beliefs to be respected do we not have to respect others?

i personally think that unless a couple agree to an open marriage having an affair is wrong ... but again that is seen as a norm now and accepted

who would be the moral police of this absolutle morality? it's a hard one to think through ... but i really do enjoy pondering such questions ....

For me the '10 commandents' are a classic example of why absolute morality doesn't work.

e.g Though shalt not kill - I don't know if I could kill to save myself, but theoretically if I saw someone about to kill a young child and it was the only way to stop them? Police snippers trying to take out a suicide bomber in order to save lives? With terminal illness, what is mercy killing and what is palliative care if it 's effects also reduce life expectancy?

Absolute morality to me implies fundamentalism, and that means that basically its supporters say there is only one 'true' way and everyone else is wrong.

I read an article this week about using the word 'never'. It was really interesting, basically it was akin to this argument using 'never' in relation to future actions is again restictive and absolutist in the extreme if you follow it up. So use it with caution :)

I do believe in my own moral imperatives which keep me true to myself, that is how we keep our own personal integrity.

ooh...now here I do believe in respecting other peoples beliefs but NOT when they go against basic human rights...and genital mutilation falls into that category for me. I've been watching the news about these 'slutwalks' and I just don't like it at all. I agree with the premise behind it which was against a comment a policeman made that women shouldn't dress like sluts and then they wouldn't get raped, but it's a case, in my eyes of carrying on that negativity. I don't wish to reclaim that word for myself at all, but I do wish to prmote the attitude of, say, reclaim the night who argue that whatever we wear, wherever we are, we don't deserve to be attaked/assaulted or raped.

    Oops. Sorry.
