Hi Chaos-is-home:hello:
I'm not going to point out the obvious of that being a LOT of meat:p.You have had some really excellent advice already. I feeel sorry for your OH as the butcher made him an offer he couldn't refuseDon't give him too hard a time!
Really hard to know where to start with threads, but I will see how this search goes

Ideas for using braising steak
Beef stew in SC or slow cooker beef casserole
Now I'm going to preview that list and see how long it looks!
Important thing is - DON'T PANIC OR BE OVERWHELMED!
Can i ask - would it be reasonable to split that into 3 months or am I taking it too far? I guess it depends on how much meat you eat and how often ?
You could do it various ways. You could
meal plan right down to the very last detail
Batch cook up a storm and freeze
Apportion chicken to last for those two dinners on Sunday, and sausages for monday and tues for example.
Just take your time with it and you will find the way that best suits you and your family. Don't panic and really make the best out of the remaining budget. For this a general plan of how to use up each ingredient would be good - as you will know you need x y and z.
Get hubby involved as well?
Right, that's enough from me for now. So sorry if the links are daunting but i wanted to give you all the links in one placex
Edit - also portion sizesA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

chaos-is-home wrote: »could i please have your recipe for sausage and lentil hotpot bitsy?
sure - here it is:
750g Sausages (but honestly I allocate two per person)
1 large onion finely chopped
3 carrots, thinkly slices
2 leeks sliced
3 tbsp flour
400ml stock
2 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
1 cup of lentils (can be red split ones or green doesn't really matter)
Brown sausages along with onion, carrots and leeks. Stir in flour and cook on low heat for few mins. Slowly add stock and bring to the boil, stir until sauce thickens, add Worcestershire sauce and pre cooked lentils.
Transfer to slow cooker and cook on medium fro 5-8 hours.
If you don't have a slow cooker I guess then as long as the lentils are thoroughly cooked you can simmer all the rest until it's cooked.
I also have recipe for Somerset Sausage Casserole:
450g sausage (again I just allocate two per person)
2 medium leeks slices
2 celery sticks sliced
2 carrots sliced
1 green pepper sliced and de-seeded
400g chopped tomatoes
1 tbsp tomato puree
150ml dry cider or normal apple juice
1 tbsp cornflour
175g sliced mushrooms
1 tsp dried sage
Brown sausages, leeks, celery, carrots and pepper.
Add tomatoes and puree and cider or apple juice.
Bring to the boil and simmer for for 10 mins.
Blend in cornflour with 3 tbsp of water and stir into casserole with mushrooms and sage.
Simmer for further 10 mins or until veg is softened and sausage cooked.
I also cook pasta, sausages, onion, broccoli and cover with tinned tomatoes for a quick pasta bake.
Hope that's given you a little bit of inspiration LOL!I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

I did use fruit squash once (something like apple and blackcurrant that sort of thing - not orange LOL!).
As for an alternative I guess it would be Somerset Casserole if it didn't contain some sort of apple related juice.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

That's a lot of meat - seems a good price! Can you freeze some for next month? Or any friends/neighbours where you could trade it for some veg?
One thing I'd suggest is getting some beans. You can get a 500g bag of haricot or cannellini beans from Tesco for around the 70p mark. Soak it overnight, boil for 10mins (no salt), drain, then stew in slow cooker with meat, garlic and onions. The beans will turn into a huge bowl of very cheap veg - tasty, too!
If you can't get any good reduced veg, try tescos frozen veg. Their Value frozen broccoli and cauliflower tastes fine. Also, think about tinned veg - value kidney beans, say, are under 15p/tin.0 -
quick update---? little 1 just got back from nannys and she has given me 60eggs that she has bought for 15p in asda reduced!! ive portioned up most of the meat, 1/2 the stewing steak is going to be put into slow cooker with veges tomorrow for dinner which should last a couple of days. also nanny gave him roulades for his tea which he is now asking for again. does anyone know how to make them?0
-
60 eggs! That's lucky. I could just eat a couple of soft-boiled ones with toast soldiers right now. Mmmm, frittata, onelette, bread and butter pudding, yorkshire puddings, even some beaten eggs poured over fried boiled potoatoes with crumbled crispy bacon on the top.
What sort of roulades did granny make? A sweet or a savoury one? I think this should entail a phone call to gran to ask for her recipe. People LOVE being asked for their recipes so just ask her for hers.0
