NO SPEEDING, NO REVENUE , NO CAMERAS

    Ergo less speed fewer deaths

If anyone wants to argue the point that it is not often clear what speed is relevant to any area

Yes I agree , speed limit signs need to be very clear and more of them ;D ;D

For those who haven't looked back this is what I posted earlier ;D

I came into this thread because I believe speed kills and was making the point "slow down"

And the first paragraph is what I was answering to :)

"unfamiliar road ,over the limit, lot on my mind, just begging for an accident ,complains ,luckily gets speed awareness course",

And this is the answer :-*

and if they'd killed somebody what awareness course would the family have, it makes my blood boil

I think there was a report on Sky News from the Department of Transport which actually placed speeding "Use of inappropriate speed for conditions" in 7th place regarding accidents.

More & more proof is being presented which indicates Speeding is a very low cause of accidents, that doesn't detract from the fact that "IF" you are in an accident travelling in excess of 30mph it's most probable that you will substain serious injuries or even death.

The fact that we acknowledge that there are very bad drivers on the road is strength enough to justify the current stance on speed limits, imagine those bad drivers driving even faster.

I will continue to drive at speeds which I consider to be safe for the conditions, this may mean that on occassion I may break the speed limit. If this is the case it certainly wont be excessive..... "Fiat Panda"?!

I just wanted to clear a few thing's up. Firstly I do not own a Fiat Panda..... Phew, glad to have got that off my chest & Secondly the part about occassionally breaking the speed limit also works in reverse, where I frequently find myself driving far slower than the speed limit due to conditions at that time, be it weather, children, obstructions et al.

Your not really trying to say it's ok to go over the limit cause somtimes you do go slower for children etc :-[ ;)

"IMHO l think there should be no limit on the motorways, you use them at your risk and that's the end of it. "

    Yeah ok :-/

    Been waiting for this one..
there are less accidents on German Autobhans where there is no speed limit because everybody in the 'fast' lane is putting there foot down.

Now like others I drive quite a bit.. (40K Miles a year).. and I cover the whole of the UK.. I see so many cameras located in "strange" locations., I start to doubt their purpose.. if it is not revenue..

Sooooooooo true! We've got loads in our area and not one is pitched in an accident blackspot where it could prevent them. We have a neverending amount of letters in our local press about them literally being a source of revenue and NOT what the local police say they are there for, while the blackspots are left unattended.
As someone else has pointed out before, you often see the police camped in their mobile units or with a speed gun in the vicinity of a camera, WHY?? Why are they NOT covering the blackspots? Surely if they did (or the speed cameras did), they could also save money by preventing many accidents, by not having to clear up afterwards ???

    Clearly shows ENGLISH roads
    road deaths ........lower
    motorway deaths.......lower
    motorway usage ......higher

This states the opposite is true

at the bottom it argues that british roads are by far safer and they want the speed limit changed...........why

I think that it is not only speed that kills but lack of concentration. The amount of people who you observe drifting along in their own little world, completely unaware of other road users (motorists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, cyslists, horse riders etc) must account for the majority of accidents?

Sure, going faster will mean worse chance of injuries/death, but some people are so unbelievably unaware of what is happening around them it must be dangerous, even if they are crawling along.

I appreciate that on minor roads, occurences are unpredicatable, and therefore, if you don't know what is on the road e.g. animals, children, tractors etc, then you should drive slower, but can't believe that on the motorway accidents are only due to speeding?

    Hi Georgina
No of course it takes something else to cause accidents but more speed more injuries/fatalities as you said ;D

As someone said earlier speed determine how bad it is :)
