Can someone explain this to me very slowly in mother's language? Mr sons have a PS3, the play things like little big planet and others online and off line. They use it to sure the internet on "the big telly", we watch DVDs and Bluray on it. If the update goes through, can they still do all these things? Linux is an equivelant of IE or Firefox, is that right? Does that mean they can't surf the net on the PS3 anymore? If so. I will be mightily !!!!!! too, as it was definitely a reason for buying, for us - they don't need PC functionality at that age, but internet access is essential for school work, email etc.
ETA I know I sound dumb. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0 -
it makes no difference to your useage0

Thank you, that was a nice straightforward answer, what would they not be able to do then? basically installing linux is a bit like putting windows on your PS3
so you can use the PS3 a bit like a computer than 'just' a console0 -
Great, we won't be doing that, don't need a fourth pc/lappie in the house. They aren't tampering with your property (unless they break into your home to uninstall the function). By this logic, all software should be supported forever and no updates should ever be released.
The update is optional, so by updating you are authorising the removal.
It's optional but basic functionality will be greatly impaired / disabled if you don't do it. You can find a interesting discussion of Sony's tactics in this regard here.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Surely the problem with pursueing the soga route, is the customer has loaded the software to modify the machine? If they hadn't loaded the new software, and the machine didn't then work as sold, then that's the time to lodge the complaint.0

but if you dont update you lose masses of functionality to the machine
updating and agrreing to the T&C's wouldnt(i think) affect any SOG clamis on the retailer0 -

I think a SOGA claim would run aground anyway due to the inability of most of the people who would deal with a contested claim to understand it.
Fair point to some degree, but Sony's "phat" PS3 either loads this new firmware or it isn't compatible with PS3 games/online functionality when the new firmware becomes a requirement. Either way, at that point, a console that arrived in a box with a manual claiming it could play games AND run Linux is no longer working as advertised on one or the other of the two points. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Reading this thread it is a shame that this 'update' has created so much dissension between us!
I use the otheros option as a safety net for my main PC failing due to my constant tweaking and generally just putting it in a bad mood! So at times it was a life saver to have net access in a pc type environment where I could download small programs or surf naturally, away from the PS3's basic browser.
I have always installed updates from Sony immediately, but was shocked on reading the EULA on this one. My 3yr warranty has just expired, and even if it had not its a games unit and a media streamer for my home, I still would have not gained anything in a new unit just lost functionality from my old.
It truth it only took me a few minutes to find a workaround, and now my daughter can play Little Big Planet online again. I have a number of games, but if buying a new game is going to take away my linux os, then unfortunately Sony has lost my custom and I really would have to look at other consoles that will be coming to the market in the near future.0
