Hi Mse 's
First time on this board , so here it goes .
I bought a "phat" ps3 just before xmas , and it states clearly that i can run another operating system on the machine .
But due to some geezer hacking the system they are now removing the option , via update .
Can they do this ? where does the law stand on this ? surely i should be compensated ! as i paid a great deal of money for this machine , because it has these features .
any advice please
J

When you bought it, did you make it known that it was a key feature? Probably not, I would suggest.
Unfortunately, not much you can do.
How do you say it was "mis-sold"?0 -
Do you have an option not to install the update?0
-
the update is optional - but in reality, not updating would render the machine useless to many people.
Sony has said the update is optional, but those people that do not install it will no longer have access to features, such as its online games network and the ability to playback certain games or Blu-ray DVDs that require the most up-to-date firmware.0 -

What operating system were you going to run on it and why ?
Or are you just jumping on the compensation bandwagon and whinging about something that won't actually affect you...0 -

Strange comment ! So your saying this is not going to affect me !
I bought the "phat" console for this option .
Makes no difference what os i decide to put on it and why i would use it
The isssue is i have been sold something with an option , and that has been taken away ! If had known sony were going to remove this option , i would have bought the slim version, would'nt i .0 -

Sony are plugging a hole that "may" allow hackers to run unauthorised code on the machine. However at this point there while possible, is still just theoretical without MIT levels of skill.
If i was the op, i'd be looking at complaining to Sony too!
Bottom line is the OP paid for something & now Sony are rescinding this for their own reasons.
Imagine if you bought a phone with a feature you wanted rykes2000 and 6 months down the line they remove the feature with no reason. Would you just suck it up, or would you be whinging on here with the rest of us disgruntled consumers??0 -
so far Sony have removed card readers,USB ports, hardware backwards compatibility, software backwards compatibility, wifi(in some models) and now the option to install a second OS
lucky it still plays games i suppose0
