    Correct Custardy.

This was always going to happen - Sony watch and learn from the hackers and a soon as they got close to the enevitable they pulled the plug.

Because the systems are online its easy to do not like the old days - what should Sony do let them run rife.

The amount of legit users must be small, my guess less than 1 in a thousand so not a lot of annoyed customers in reality.

Better to think of the masses and try to give them a smooth as possible service - than risk all on Psn getting choked -hacked - no game sales ect ect .

Thers plenty of life left in this model machine, I have no doubt that that scrpt kids will find a way round eventually and have it their way - anything one human invents another can find a way round it.

Right now the only losers are the legit but thats the price paid.

Sony had little need to 'watch' hackers
the first time i saw the specs with an open OS feature i saw it was a foothold for hackers and i know very little of this stuff
my xbox 1 was chipped, why? because it made the machine into a cracking media centre
my 360 isnt hacked because all it does is allow copy games to play,so no gain to me
    same for my PS3
if console makersa want to discourage hacking then they need to make it more hassle than its worth
as i have said,M$ have the best model so far for this with the near bricking of console functionality
even if my unmodded console got mistakenly affected by this,it could be sent to M$ to confirm its legit and i wouldnt be at a loss
Sonys stance is hitting legit console owners
if a hack came out ot open up the PS3's full media capabilities then i would be interested,so why doesnt sony do this? the machine is more than capable to do all this
right now im using free 3rd party software to stream via a PC with far less power than the PS3

Ahhh, back to those evil nasty smelly wicked wicked hackers again are we?
Which part of the argument are you missing?

I tell you what, I’ll sell you a wonderful new mobile phone and you will buy it because you can call people AND send SMS messages. In a few months time I will provide an update for the phone – due to security issues the update will remove the SMS functionality. You can choose not to update the phone and continue to use SMS, but you will not be able to use the phone to call people until you update.
That’s okay though because it is for security to prevent hackers. And you agreed to the EULA when you made your first phone call that says I can do that.

Do you use the Internet? Do you like the Internet? Guess who brought it to you!!

Any clearer? While your festering over your next unwelcomed response, pay a visit to hackaday dot com! Then come back with the 'evil nasty smelly wicked wicked hacker' attitude!

    LOL

No need to get shirty as I said it was always gonna happen.

The minute I saw they they were letting people add an OS I thought wow and for how long - they even said they would never remove it - again I thought thats impossible.

Im not taking sides in this so much as thinking of the majority.

I agree that users should have some compense If they purchased mainly because of the way they could use it as a PC - so they offer a partial refund and I bet very few take them back because they still want it as a games machine.

"Presumably with reference to the "False Advertising" they will just stop advertising this capability."

Again, not really seeing the wood from the trees here! They advertised the FAT PS3s (which are no longer available to buy new) with the Other OS feature and have now taken it away, that is the point of the argument!

I think you have missed the point. The reference to False Advertising was relating to future sales.

Yes, I know where it's coming from, my mistake was assuming that all the FAT PS3s which have the Other OS feature are no longer available to buy new, as the SLIM PS3s which are being manufactured now, do not have this feature any way.

i bought my fat ps3 a few years ago with the other os funtion . i have downloaded ,burnt to a disk and installed linux (wich was perfectly fine to do and recomended when i purchased the console). today everything is working fine , but tommorow my perfectly functioning ps3 will have less features and be worth less than ...it is today !
i dont use linux everyday but its a funtion i like to have and dont want removing .
but i am going to be forced to make a choice , keep linux and dont play any newer games ,blurays or use online features .
if this is the way they fix a security flaw by removing the whole feature instead of patching the problem and we let sony get away with this WHATS NEXT?

So if Sony don't take away this function, it potentially allows the system to be hacked. This will allow PS3 users to run homebrew programs, and the vast majority that hack their system will do this to run pirated game.

Eventually with the arrival of this influx of pirated games, the PS3 will go the same way and the PSP. Very little in the way of new release games etc. A glossy technically superb glossy doorstop, that gets ignored by the developers.

I'm personally in favour of !!!!ing of a few yellow dog users, to safeguard Sony's ten year PS3 plan, and my investment. Anyone that claim that the only reason they bought this console was because of this capability, is talking out of their hat.

Get off the compo wagon and grow a pair, and stop cashing those Giro's or whatever it is you do these days.

Actually there are people out there who purchased PS3s specifically to run Linux.

Not that I suppose you care. Your post makes it perfectly clear that it's all about you in your little world.
Mind you, given that this is how Sony are choosing to respond to security issues, you had better start hoping someone doesn't find a hole in a feature you use.

keyfun, I've noticed you've titled your post "advice". We've already had quite a thorough discussion of the legal situation and a few people in this thread believe that you'll be able to get at least some damages paid from the retailer you bought the PS3 from. What more advice do you need?
