I'm glad I don't have a PS3 (or any Sony products after the infamous Sony Rootkit scandal).

I agree with DrScotsman: since the OP bought a product that was advertised as having a specific feature and that feature is no longer available, in my opinion it contravenes the Sale of Goods Act that states that goods must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality.

It could be argued that "satisfactory quality" and "fitness for purpose" mean that the product should work as advertised and be durable (work without faults for a "reasonable" period of time).

I would ask the retailler for a refund and sue for damages if they don't at least compensate you significantly (you may not be entitled to a full refund - I'm not sure).

In any case, I would be livid and would certainly get legal advice on the issue if it was me!

i must admit,i am tempted to fire off a letter to Sony purely on principle
i'm not that bothered though had always meant to put another OS on the PS3 just to see what it could do
i dont think im bothered enough to hassle toysrus(in my case) though

So if Sony don't take away this function, it potentially allows the system to be hacked. This will allow PS3 users to run homebrew programs, and the vast majority that hack their system will do this to run pirated game.

Eventually with the arrival of this influx of pirated games, the PS3 will go the same way and the PSP. Very little in the way of new release games etc. A glossy technically superb glossy doorstop, that gets ignored by the developers.

I'm personally in favour of !!!!ing of a few yellow dog users, to safeguard Sony's ten year PS3 plan, and my investment. Anyone that claim that the only reason they bought this console was because of this capability, is talking out of their hat.

Get off the compo wagon and grow a pair, and stop cashing those Giro's or whatever it is you do these days.

so did sonys 10 year plan not have scope to see that having an open OS platform could lead to hacking?

I was reading about this last night and find it funny - I can see how it would annoy the hacker boys but they wouldnt get very far anyway because if they did Sony could send out a patch more or less instantly - which maybe what has happened.

To me there was always a security issue alllowing some machines to have an OS.

The new plans ahead make the PS3 sound more interesting

    More downloadable content and freebies
Possible subsciption services with early free test play for new games - in game chat - deals with online movie rental companies to instantly watch movies for a fee - they might also include a warranty extended service while you are paying for the term of your subsciption meaning you machine is covered against failure.

And not to forget anything the 3D world of ideas they might throw at us.

Potentially the PS3 could evolve into what we wish it could be.

Dont worry about a few geeks let the entertainment roll on and get better.

Love the date they are sending out the update - brings a smile to my face to think they came up with the date on purpose to P off the nerds.

I think they've done well to have had a system which has remained so secure for so long. Longer than the majority of other systems.

Would those that are seeking compensation, be happy to pay for the additional free feature of the PS3 that have been introduced since launch day? Most of these have a minority appeal too, in the same way that installing an alternative OS does.

Maybe like Apple, Sony should charge for firmware updates?

Traditionally, the most successful consoles are those which are easiest to hack.

Take the PS1. Chipping was so easy and so many people bought them just to get the cheap hacked games.

    The same happened with PS2.

In the 80s and early 90s, when pc gaming was at its biggest (and other home computers) disk and tape copying was at an all time high, too.

The PSP has failed because it's neither a handheld console nor a home console. It tries to be a PS2 but without the second analogue stick, it ends up with half hearted ports.

The UMD was a stupid idea, too. A huge portion of sales went to home brew people who were turned off by all the firmware updates that stopped their homebrew. Yes, im sure a healthy amount of those people pirated games, but theyre also the sort of people who will support the games they like out of principal. If you're nerdy enough to go to the trouble of hacking a PSP, youre likely enough of a gamer to want smaller companies to survive while sampling the wares of the Ubisofts and activisions of the world.

On the other hand, super successful DS is also the easiest to play copies on.

nothing really 'exciting' in that IMO
something like decent codec support would go much further
stuff like movies on demand is just following with what other services/machines offer
as for the PS3 'evolving',it was supposed to be a media hub for the home
removing features isnt really going towards that is it?

Whilst I agree with most of your post, I'm not sure that the word "Principle" and "Pirate" belong together.

TBH i think M$ are heading in the right direction with the integrating of the gamertag/account/xbox live and blocking that with hacked consoles
the one part of that which annoys me is having gold accounts per account not console
so my OH plays on my account as we are not paying twice for gold
