Now that it is only DH and myself at home, we have moved to a water meter voluntarily. So now I have a shower staning in a large washing bowl and use the water to throw in the toilet instead of pulling the chain. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

I pull the dust from the small round opening in the disposable bag of my vacuum cleaner. It takes maybe 5 minutes to do, but it can save a lot I terms of buying the disposable bags. You can only do it a few times for each bag as the rubber seal at the opening can get easily damaged, but it still saves quite a bit.
A tip is to never buy the bags in an electrical appliance store. Buy from ebay or a bargain shop.0 -

I have spent an interesting afternoon rereading this thread. Loads are saying half makeup wipes. I have never bought wipes just use a face cloth and water or a little soap.
For anything from cornflakes to rice and pasta I decant them into plastic containers so no one but me knows the brand.
I stack almost every jar and bottle upsides down and for handcream when it is nearly done cut about an inch in front the end and use the end bit as a top to reseal it.
Was looking after my GDs this week and the oldest will take an apple take one bite and then put it into the fridge - I found 6 apples in various stages of going brown in the fridge so make an apple crumble out of them. :rotfl:0 -
I have found that the best way of squeezing the last bit of toothpaste out of the tube is to take your toothbrush, wipe the end clean (because sometimes it's still wet), grip the handle part with your teeth, and use both hands for squeezing the tube. You can actually see what you are doing, and the brush won't fall over or get away from you at a critical moment.
When nothing squeezes out anymore, you can still cut the tube open, but I have found that really very little is left.Are you wombling, too, in '22? € 58,96 = £ 52.09Wombling in Restrictive Times (2021) € 2.138,82 = £ 1,813.15Wombabeluba 2020! € 453,22 = £ 403.842019's wi-wa-wombles € 2.244,20 = £ 1,909.46Wombling to wealth 2018 € 972,97 = £ 879.54Still a womble 2017 #25 € 7.116,68 = £ 6,309.50Wombling Free 2016 #2 € 3.484,31 = £ 3,104.590 -
I don't know if someone has mentioned this, but when I start washing dishes, and the sponge is smelly, I will put it into an unwashed teacup on the side, boil the kettle and fill the cup up. Then I wait for about 10 min, until the water has cooled down enough to touch and do my dishes then.

I'm a bleach and boil washernot very environmentally friendly I suppose.
I like to sew and I'm the only one I know who's made reusable cloth sanitary wear, small face cleaning and make up wipe cloths and reusable fabric kitchen roll
No wonder my family think I'm eccentric :rotfl:0 -
My youngest dd 4yrs started unrolling half the toilet roll, and after wiping, throw it all in the bowl to flush  So, I did what I read here (and in the Tightwad Gazette) and squished the roll so it did not roll so well anymore. Next thing I see is the half filled toilet roll in the bin and a new one on the holder, because "the other was broken, mummy" :rotfl:Are you wombling, too, in '22? € 58,96 = £ 52.09Wombling in Restrictive Times (2021) € 2.138,82 = £ 1,813.15Wombabeluba 2020! € 453,22 = £ 403.842019's wi-wa-wombles € 2.244,20 = £ 1,909.46Wombling to wealth 2018 € 972,97 = £ 879.54Still a womble 2017 #25 € 7.116,68 = £ 6,309.50Wombling Free 2016 #2 € 3.484,31 = £ 3,104.590

I'm so glad this thread has been re-visited....have laughed so much reading, mainly because I do most of it and think it's normal!
My children,(all grown and left home) think I'm quite mad, and often remark, "oh she's off again" when I do something frugal that deems to them as eccentric.
I don't mind...in fact I love it!:rotfl:Living a frugal retirement without treading on the planet :T

Great thread with some good ideas. I do the cut ends off tubes things all the time and always swill jars out. I had to explain to my colleague today that I was carefully smoothing out the tissue paper which was inside my new boots as I could use it for wrapping gifts. I realise 'new boots' isnt very money saving but in my defence they were 50% off plus a 5% quidco and a £5 voucher to spend and they are so I can walk no drive to work
Whenever I keep paper I know I am channelling my old Nan who used to open presents so carefully so as not to tear the paper.
I woudl be far better at this lark if I lived alone but I can't see OH and daughter showering in a bowl and then flushing the loo with it. Will try squishing loo roll ends though."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
