Wallpaper NEVER got binned in our house when we were kids.

Mum also used to use it to line kitchen cupboards so that any spills were easily got rid of.

now thats a good idea!! come to think of it my mum used to do that too!!

  • If I ever buy bread that has seeds on the top,the seeds that fall off onto the bread board I scoop up and put in a bag so that I can use later on either scattering over the kids cereals, inside sarnies, top of soups and salads.I love the nutty baked taste of them-and they don't last long in fact I have been known to go through the loaves in the shop to see which loaf has the most loose seeds at the bottom of the bag before I buy.

Mad I know but I love 'em.

  • I love "rooting". I work in an engineering workshop and have a rule that whatever Jennie finds in the scrap/bin, is hers!
That's why I have a lovely tool box trolley made of recycled metal and some fabulously retro cushion covers made from an old (70's) duvet cover that was about to be cut into rags.
Never be ashamed to be tight, or to reuse what others have thrown out.

BTW, this has had me in stitches - thanks all of you for your hilarious and useful advice!

Brings back memories - nanna and a friend used to get together and make each other dusters from worn out flanelette sheets, after cutting the sheet in half and 'turning' it to get more use from it, and use old dresses and skirts for their 'pinnies'
Is 10 seconds really long enough to kill bugs in the sponge? Mine go in the dishwasher, and ds has made himself a little spongebob squarepants out of one:)
I shower often at the gym rather than at home, spose i could save money by not being a member, but then it would cost me in other ways... I admire the brazenness of the woman there who took a whole pile of ironing in with her and stood there in the changing rooms doing her weeks' ironing :)

Oh I'm nearly wetting myself... read this one out to my OH who said 'I'd have just hung them up in the steam room!" Oh God, what have I done to him? :rotfl:

Oh my God! My mum used to do this all the time when we were little and cash was tight. Sometimes it would take her a while to find two 'legs' the same colour. Am sure on some occasions she would have one leg darker than the other!

I think your mum must be the same age as me as I used to do this in the 70's. We used to put all the tights in a saucepan and boil them up and they all came out the same colour.
Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot.

Using old wallpaper for wrapping birthday presents.
I've even bought wallpaper when it's been reduced to 50p or £1 a roll just for that purpose. You can wrap loads and loads of presents with one roll. You could be really MS and get large 'samples' from B & Q and such like to use. (I've done that for wallpapering a doll's house.)
