I took the glass bowl out of the washing machine door when it broke. It makes an excellent bowl for salad when we have a BBQ

Damm, never thought of that! We did take out the drum and place it in the garden with plants in :rotfl:

My daughter recently told me about a tip she learned via the army, where it is common practice. I always used to dry shoes in a well-ventilated area but we have no overnight heat source. She told me to use scrunched up newspaper in wet shoes and trainers. It 'wicks' the water away from the inside and the shoes really do dry more quickly. If shoes are very wet, replace the paper when it is wet and leave to dry again.
The other tip is that last week, after DS came home with dried emulsion paint all over his school fleece and trousers  I was about to throw them out and DD suggested soaking them overnight in hottish water and detergent. I was amazed that the paint, which would not even pick or brush off the previous night, could be removed easily the next morning. They've been in the washing machine since and there are just a few tiny spots left.

DD thinks my most peculiar OS item is my 'baking beans'. I have a few ounces of dried beans which have been in a container in my kitchen drawer for, we calculated, about thirty years. They are what I use to weigh down the greaseproof paper when baking a pastry case 'blind' (without a filling) to prevent the middle from rising up. I've lived in five different homes but still have the same few pence worth of beans for that job. I've probably replaced almost every item in the kitchen except my retro beans.

Purlies! LOL never heard that on ebefore. I grew up in a rural area and it was a race out of the front door with the shovel when the posh horsey folk went by - 'get it on the roses' Dad used to say. We also collected the liquid which ran off a dung heap FANTASTIC fertiliser for the tomatoes!

When we're giving each other birthday or xmas cards, my family don't write anything on the envelope - after all, you know who it's for, you're *handing* it to them.

How long would an open carton of this milk last in the fridge? The reason I ask is I usually end up pouring out an almost full 1 pint carton of milk a week as I only tend to use a little bit for coffee etc. Is it ok to use on cereal etc?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, just never thought of using UHT milk before :)

I only ever buy dried milk and make it up a spoonful at a time (for tea etc) as I need it. Little bit of cold water in a tumbler, add teaspoonful of milk, stir, pour into teamug after fishing out teabag. Simple! Keep a bottle of water in the fridge and make up a mugful for cereal (two dessert spoonfuls to a mugful for my milk powder - Mr T's skimmed cheapo). No more old milk being chucked out!

Whenever I make pavlova I often keep the yolks submerged in milk until they either go off or I work up the energy to make custard or ice cream.

Use them up in quiche, omlete, scrambled eggs. You could also whisk them with the milk and freeze it.

I water everything down that you can possibly think of and the kids hate it!! i water down shampoo, bubble bath ( i use that in the hand dispensers instead of liquid soap), bleach so i can put it in a spray bottle so you use less, I even water down the vinegar that the kids put on their chips :D

Never spray the *surface* that you are going to clean. Spray the sponge or pad that you are going to use, and then wipe that over the surface. There's a reason why the adverts always show people spraying the surfaces and then wiping them - bigger profits!

... and of course because your sprayer is upright when you spray your sponge, you can use your spray cleaner right down to the last gurgling drop.

Hello, everyone, I'm new. I do most of the things suggested - just a few extra -

    - My OH makes a big pot of filter coffee (reusing the same paper towel filter, until the filter is ready to overflow) every morning, turns the machine off, then microwaves a cup at a time.

    more later

Please tell your OH not to do this! Coffee has a lot of nasties in it as well as all the good coffee stuff and by running the hot water through it again and again you leach out all sorts of acidic stuff that's not good for you. By all means use a re-usable filter, but empty it each time. My BIL had nasty gastric pains for *ages* until we worked out why!
