Have entertained and educated myself reading this whole threat this afternoon. Like the idea of taking a small pot to fill with coffee when u are in a hotel. Always thought the room cleaner would be looking in the bin to see how many I had drank and how many I had pinched . I grow my own veg but have never mastered how to make the vinegar mixture to taste like the ones from a certain factory so I buy 1 large jar of their beetroot and when it's eaten then I pickle my own and add it to their jar of vinegar - hope that makes sense. But my best tip is -don't be shy to ask - 1 of my pals was throwing out her carpet shampooer and another was replacing her dishwasher so I acquired both. :rotfl:

one of the funny things I used to do as a tight student was to stick spring onions in a pot of earth on the window sill and keep snipping off what I need to use for cooking or salad. as long as there's a bit of white left and the roots, they just keep growing back! my record was having a bunch of spring onions lasting 4 months!

Siaoeh, thats a great tip! One thing I was always popping into Sainsburys for was spring onions as I love them in my pasta and rice and would inevitably end up buying more than just those.
I am going to have to try that, it would save me loads!

Have spent a few hours yesterday and today reading the whole thread - fantastic! Glad to say many of these I do already, but have noted a few others to try. Waste things? No-one on this site, that's for sure!

  • If one of my rubber gloves (for washing up) gets a hole in, I save the good hand so that when the next pair of rubber gloves breaks, I will have a new pair of gloves. Obviously I have to try to make sure I put a hole in the opposite glove (that is the only downside hmmmmm :rotfl: )

Heres some of my OS tips

I buy value bread from tesco, but people still think im strange as i freeze it in individual portion sizes..

I also buy cheap shower gel etc and decant it into nice expensive bottles

I mix cheap coffee 1:2 with my favorite coffee to make it last longer and it still tastes as good

I chop my dishwasher tablets in half and nearly only ever buy them on BOGOF or some other offer

I buy washing powder rather than tablets and only ever use half what your supposed to, and if stuff is dirty or marked rather than just worn i just throw in a bit of washing soda, my whites are super white and ive never noticed a difference

I use bicarb of soda in the cat litter tray to keep any nasty niffs at bay
    Same in the fridge

My one expense is i bought 2 goodsphere revitalisers and use the essences in them, but they keep my home smelling wonderfully fresh and if you buy 2 of those plug in things a month, thats £10, so they are an OS alternative, and purify the air eliminating air fresheners or deodorisers

    Stardrops is my freind :)

Thats all for now but if i think of any more i will let you know !

I save all the odd gloves for when I clean the bathroom or some other grotty job. Wearing a glove on the wrong hand isn't too bad if it's just 10 mins with your hand round the U-bend!

I remember reading somewhere that once a girl's reached puberty her wee's no good for the compost as it contains hormones that upset it, but you could always dangle your toddlers over the compost!

Some of my other "pet" things...outside the home i have a pathological hatred of paying car parking charges. I need a car because of the nature of my work, but will go out of my way to park for free. Often i use supermarket car parks and walk to the other shops from there, or find a residential street, or even wing it and use a pub car park..anything rather than pay.

I think your approach is spot-on and I do quite a few of those things too, but I did wonder if you're spending more on petrol, driving round the houses looking for free parking, than you would paying for a parking place? It depends how expensive parking is I guess. It's 60p for two hours in our nearest big city which doesn't seem too bad to me, but not as good as the two nice big totally free car parks in the nearby town I tend to go to.
