You can't log onto any other router than the one your PC is connected to, it's just the local network (so you can't log remotely into your parent's router). No free lunch, and no free laptop0

right my sister is down at parents
aol is now switched off
plusnet needs activating
so i've told them the following which doesn't work:
1) plug in exisiting netgear router with ethernet cable
type plus.net - nothing
2) switch off router and back on and try the above
nothing
3) 192.168.0.1
so i tried exisiting user: admin password: sky
nothing
asked to try my plusnet broadband setup username i.e. including @plusdsl.net
password the one i used to set up
still nothing
help please
how are they suppose to register with no internet connection?

You don't have to 'register' or 'activate' anything. Once the correct settings have been entered into the router and rebooted, the connection should be in place.
Might help if you used the correct router login though:
http://192.168.1.1.
Does this get you to the login page?
If your old router username and password have been changed from the defaults, then you will need to use those to log in. If you don't know them, then you will need to do a reset on the router to restore the factory settings, the manual will advise how to do this.
The PlusNet broadband settings are on this link:

yeah tried :
192.168.1.1
gives me option to enter user name and password
it's a netgear router from sky and never changed the user name or password i don't think, only changed the wireless appearance name and password for that
so i need to log into 192.168.1.1 and then what?
it should be:
user: admin
password: sky
as it's a netgear from sky0 -
Yes, try the Sky defaults if the Netgear ones aren't working.
So you have got to the login page, can you login using the correct username and password?
If so, you just enter the correct details for PlusNet a on the link given earlier, plus your Plusnet username and password. Save and exit router interface. It should reboot and then give you a connection. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
thanks
having more of a dig around which i didn't think would be an issue, looks like netgear router from sky needs a new firmware to work with other ISPs
bit silly now as parents don't have intenret connection to download any of them
i'm going to have to order a new router, cheapest i assume is if i contact plusnet and see if i can get one from them0 -
It's possible that Sky's routers (or some of them) are firmware locked, someone else can hopefully advise on this.
But can you actually log in to test it?
PlusNet wireless router is free plus £6.99 courier.
Loads of wireless routers on eBay for a tenner upwards, something like a Netgear DG834G would be fine.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
thanks
looked at firmware unlcoking, but as they have no internet connection to get the updates that causes an issue
by the time i rip it on disc and send it to them, have now ordered a router from plusnet, which i should have done from ordering0
