I think the idea of the work placement is to get people back into the groove of working again, getting up early, getting the bus etc etc so they don't end up psychologically welfare dependent

Its only four weeks so its not that big a deal

it doesnt stop people from feeling welfare dependant because they still only get their benefits. it would be much better if they got a proper wage while on placement. that might get them enthusiastic about working.

If you are not signing on, and by that I mean physically going into a Jobcentre every fortnight, then you will not need to do FND

i think they meant in cases were people just sign on for ni and get no benefit.

Thank you. It is Flexible new deal where we are and I am over 25. I have been unemployed for a year, I last saw a JC advisor in Jan for about 45 minutes as I had to take my daughter with me, we discussed college courses but again the childcare issue seemed to hamper things so he just left it really. There was a course I was interested in but there was no funding available for help with childcare so I dont understand why I have been referred to this when they know my situation, of course it could be an error.

trevormax - I agree with you on many points especially the pocket money!
I do not get housing benefit or council tax benefit so it is purely for my stamp

Just out of interest how much does it cost to pay the stamp yourself as I believe you can via direct debit ?

Do you have any further info on this at all please
i dont need it myself but on the first letter i got from them it says if you need a registered child carer, an interpreter or any other service in order to attend, we may be able to arrange this and cover your costs. give us as much notice as you can.

i believe you can pay it yourself but i dont know how much it is. i think my uncle did this to avoid signing on when he retired from the police. he is working again now. i think he got bored. he now drives a minibus for disabled kids.

I think it would be interesting to compare how much it costs to actually pay the stamp and how much it costs to send someone on a FND course who is only coming in the jobcentre in the first place to get their stamp. I would imagine the FND is significantly more

    4. Work placement are not mandatory if you take a different work based option such as future jobs fund or work based training. The work placements are usually made mandatory for people who don't want to do any of the other things.

what does future jobs fund and work based training involve? i have only seen my pcc once and already she is desperately keen to get me doing a work placement with a company. she didnt even mention that there were other options.

i know about the work placements i was just left wondering why you directed the comment about it sorting the men from the boys at me, are they somehow tougher than they used to be? i've done a 6 month work placement in the past on the old new deal so i doubt a 4 week placement will be that bad in comparison.

    To clarify

"Men" = People who want to work and are seriously aiming towards that goal

"Boys" = People who have been on the dole for some time and think it is their right

Thsi Goverment, for all its manifold errors, seems to be finally picking apart the consequences of it and the previous Tories mistakes
