I think alot of the problem lies with the fact that these days (I passed my test 9 years ago so can only comment on that time) people pass their test on normal roads and there is nothing taught about motorway driving and proper etiquette.

    Nail on the head. :T

I actually believe there should be some compulsory motorway element once you have passed your test or even before. I realise that is might not be practical or safe to do this on road but something like a motorway theory test so that people are fully aware of how to drive on motorways.

I've got a fair bit of motorwar experience now but when I'd passed my test I probably would have annoyed a few people when I first started using the motorway as I wasn't experienced or aware of how you should really drive and what to do/not to do. I can see the difference in how I drive on the motorway now compared to when I first used them and that's come from experience and asking other people. I don't get flashed to move out of the way because if I see someone coming up behind faster than me I move over to the left even if it's a dual carriageway and I'm going faster than the other lane because I know I can overtake again once they're gone, if they want to go faster than me then that's fine. When I first started driving I probably wouldn't have thought like that and would have been a more immature driver.

You have to learn about tram signals for your theory which isn't exactly something everybody encounters regularly so surely there should be more stuff on motorway driving because I know there wasn't when I did my test.

I understand your point, but irrespective as to what most people say about young drivers they always follow the rules of the road (correct lane / indication etc).

Most middle lane hogs are usually of the older variety...

I would say that the worst offenders are women and OAPs. Sorry but that's the truth.

That's funny, all the middle lane hoggers I see (800 motorway miles per month) are male, female, young and old.

Any kind of driver can be a c0ck. Their sex and age are irrelevant, but do make for convenient prejudices.

Got to admit I always look when I find one and haven't found any pattern yet as to age and sex.

Indeed the etiquette is in the Highway code, which you are supposed to learn before you pass your test. Most young drivers have no problems with this.

However having said that I must temper it by agreeing with this:

So anyone care to admit to taking the racing line on a motorway?

(Albeit at silly o clock in the morning when its dead quiet)

On a big bend heading towards Stirling on a Suzuki TL1000r (widowmaker) I have never done this at high speed as dawn rose on a summer morning pas-compris.gif
