Surrey Heath Museum in Camberley, Surrey is free. It won't let me post a link, but it will come up in Google search. Thought you might like to add it to the list.

I would like to mention my local museum - Summerlee - The Museum of Scottish Industrial Life. It's free and it's a great day out for the whole family. It's located in Coatbridge about half an hour from Glasgow. It's open Monday - Saturday from 10am to 5pm (10am to 4pm for the Winter season - End of October to End of March).

There are indoor attractions at their exhibition hall with working machinery. If the weather is good, there is a nice playpark and picnic area, and the grounds are well worth a wander.

Take a look at these websites - http://www.visitlanarkshire.com/attractions/historic-heritage/Summerlee-The-Museum-of-Scottish-Industrial-Life/ or http://www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=15877

There are three free museums in Brighton. The Dome museum (next to the Royal Pavilion) has wonderful furniture, ceramics, costume, silverware and paintings, as well as stuff on Brighton as a resort.(n.b. There are often specific additional exhibitions, which have an entry fee)

The Booth museum holds what is probably the largest private collection of stuffed animals and birds anywhere. Free entry.

Hove museum is an odd little gem, with early films, ceramics, paintings, and a large collection of toys. The restaurant is wonderful - 20th century paintings, 18th century china and a short menu of very good food.( I almost didn't mention this, because it's too good a secret. The food isn't free, but it's good value!)

We visited Manchester university's John Rylands library at weekend. Situated in the centre of Manchester on Deansgate, fascinating and breathtaking place (plus never known the children to be so quiet!!)

It is easy to find info online but unfortunately I cant post the link!
