As has been said you can freeze nearly everything.

I picked up a fab book called the complete home home freezer by Mary Norwak. It is out of print as it is from the 70's but I picked it up from a charity shop for 40p. I knew it was good as my mum has a copy as well.

And it says you freeze loads of stuff like cucumber (I know I was thinking the same)celery, beetroot.

It is a great book and if you can get your hands on it try it.

Oh and thing about not re-freezing is a bit strange. As I have bought quiches (reduced to clear before any one says anything) and it says that even though they have been frozen before I can re-freeze them.

    Hi make life easier,

The carrot and turnip should be fine to freeze and we have an older thread here on freezing mashed potato.

We also have a very recent thread on what can and can't be frozen, so I'll merge your thread with it to keep all the replies together. The posts are listed in date order, so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

  • I freeze absolutely everything mushrooms, mash, chilli, lasagne, cooked meat, bread as I hate throwing anything away. It saves me so much time and money as I always have HM leftovers in the freezer reducing the need to buy tasteless ready meals or takeaways when its been a long day.

I freeze the long-life stuff since I can never get through a whole litre before it goes off. It goes a really horrible orange colour and stays that colour when defrosted but it tastes fine when I put it in banana milkshake (although closing your eyes while drinking helps!).

I usually freeze it in ice cube trays so I can just use however many cubes I need.

Never tried freezing the stuff from the chiller cabinet but wouldn't think it is that different.
  • Most foods can be frozen successfully, and I often freeze foods which are labelled not suitable for freezing. However, as has been mentioned, previously frozen meat or fish should be cooked before refreezing.
The only things I've found out through experience can't be frozen successfully are beansprouts and salad leaves (lettuce and stuff) which go all mushy and horrible, and anything containing mayonnaise, which separates out with the fat on top, and won't remix satisfactorily. I've even frozen cottage cheese (against the advice on the tub), and it's fine if stirred thoroughly when defrosted. Some soft fruits will go a bit mushy though, but still fine for using in recipes. I personally prefer not to freeze mushrooms, since I find it impairs the flavour a bit, so I try to eat all my mushrooms while fresh.
  • I never manage to eat my mushrooms while they are fresh. I tend to chop them up and roast with chopped pepper, onions etc then freeze in small portions. That way I always have roast vegetables to put in my sandwiches (as long as I remember to defrost the night before).
