Hi Cate :hello: am a newbie like you, did my wk 1 run 1 yesterday too and will be doing my second one tomorrow (samesa you as my little girl woud say!!)....I too felt great after although my legs are aching a bit today...good luck for tomorrows run x
What's a depo injection Drea - sounds painful

Anyone got any tips for running up hills? I'm okish on the flat if I take it slowly and downhills are obviously fine but hills just kill me. I've signed up to a 5k in June and I feel a bit sick at the thought of it cos approx 1/3 of it is uphill.
I know I prob just need to start running more on hills but my lungs feel like they will explode, usually its my breathing that gives up before my legs.0 -

When you're doing hills, make sure your stride is as short as possible, you want to minimise the amount you go "up" in each step. If that doesn't help, slightly weaving side to side will lessen the angle a little, although increase the overall duration. Keep looking up the hill...It's tempting to look at the floor in front of you, but looking up will help to open up your lungs and will keep your eye on the prize. Finally, just be assured that it gets easier. A lot easier.0 -
Thanks Idiophreak, I think I fail before I even start, I need to start thinking more positively instead of deciding I cant do it and just avoiding it. I dont know about the getting easier part though, my husband says it doesnt get easier, you just get faster! I can see progress though, when I started about 8 weeks ago I couldnt run 50m without stopping and walking and I managed to run for 35mins without stopping on Thursday evening which I am so pleased with.
I've been following this thread with interest for some time so hope nobody minds me chipping in now. I didnt follow the couch to 5k program, just went out with my DH to start with (he can actually run) and ran as far as possible, then walked then ran etc and the distance I ran gradually got longer and longer. He encouraged me to run when I felt I couldnt and prob wouldnt have done had he not been there to encourage me. I now feel a bit more confident going on my own but preferred the darker evenings when I could hide lol0 -

I can see where he's coming from generally, but hills definitely get easier. I don't even notice hills that used to have me hyperventilating when I started - and it takes a proper big hill to slow me down now...Even when my fitness goes off a little (like now!), I find little difference between running on the flat and over undulations...0 -
Hi All,
Welcome to the newbies and well done to everyone
Drea - Im happy you got spangly new trainers - sounds like they will be ace for you.
Well, I'm back from visiting my parents for the weekend. Was planning to do Week 7 Run 2 this morning with my mum (who at 64 is way more fitter than me, and goes to the gym 5 days a week). Packed my running clothes......and forgot my trainers...doh!!!! So no run for me. So will do Week 7 Run 2 on Wednesday now instead!
Hope everyone is enjoying themselves - as it should be fun. Honest!!!0 -
Well, I need to lose about 3.5 kg in 3 days, so I went back to the gym tonight. Probably won't manage, but will do all I can. (I have fertility consultant appointment, when I am most likely will be referred for IVF and need my BMI be down to 30 - the problem is they only told me this afternoon that the appointment is on Thursday!!!).
So, I managed Week 6 Run 1. It was ok, but my hips took battering - I can feel them now, and I hope they will settle down tonight.
Ok, I have to run (metaphorically) - I have my piano lesson in 5 min!!!Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
Oh, Sammygirl, just snuck ahead of you now. Wk7,Run2 tucked away. Only problem is, I'm getting a little carried away. Because I've ditched Mr Ullrey and done timed music (with a cool down song at the end), I just get overcome with the urge to run to my house (much to my neighbours amazement tonight!). Have been on mapmyrun and did 4.3kms, so nearly there. Need to find a slight add on to my circuit.
Teerah - sounds really silly to write it, but I have an imaginary gear leaver which I pull when I get near hills:o:o I've only started doing them this week (can't avoid them now it's continous running).
:oJust thought, I'm not sure I change gears when I go downhill though :rotfl:
Have fun everyoneNow proud Mumto3 :j0 -

Ahh I feel safe now you're back to testing things out for me :rotfl:Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -
I've got week 4 run 1 in the morning and don't mind saying I'm nervous. It seems like quite a jump from week 3 to week 4.Never let your sucesses go to your head and never let your failures go to your heart.:beer:0
