Hi All, I hope you don't mind me posting, and apologies if it's been mentioned before as I haven't gone back through all 29 pages!
I started off doing the couch to 5K program last year, and have recently been doing Parkruns.
If you go to www.parkrun.com (it's totally free in true MSE style!) They offer weekly, 5K, timed free runs open to all ages and abilities up and down the country. It's sponsored by Nike, GSK Lucozade, The London Marathon and Sweatshop in the UK who make it possible for these events to be free. Results are emailed the same day and posted on the website with historical results and stats including age group records and age-graded performances (for those getting older!). I half ran half walked my first one and it took me 47 minutes. Now my best time is 32:42 and that still includes a wee walking recovery break or two! :rotfl:
I will always be a plodder I feel, but thats ok! I'm still carrying extra weight - I'm a size 16 now - was a big 18 in Jan but I've lost 1.5 stone since doing this.
I'm going out this afternoon doing 11 miles in prep for the Edinburgh Half Marathon I am doing on May 23rd - and if someone had have told me last year I'd have been doing that I'd have laughed very loudly and said "Yeah, Right!!!" Again, I'm not breaking any records - it took me 2hrs and 4 mins to do 16.3K last Sunday but I've done it by following the 5K to 10K program, and then the 10K to Half Marathon.
So the key is really to stick at it! And entering a run or two sure does focus you as you have something to aim for :D

Thanks, I've been nosing at the parkrun website and it looks really good, I might go after I reach my 5k :)

i, just a quick dash in.

Thanks for the extra links - I will have a look later when Ive got more time.

I was supposed to do Week 6 Run 3 this morning, but I really couldn't get out of bed! And by the time I did I knew the park would be choc-a-block, so I didn't go :(

Naughty me, I know. But I will resume normal service on Wednesday :j

    Happy running :)

Just a quick post . Still feeling lousy and I really must go back to work tomorrow. I decided to walk my run today wearing my hubbys super duper GPS thing so I could check how long my run is. (unfortunately I have tried themapmyrun website and it cannot cope with the alleyways I run down!)
It was a disaster. Could not get the thing to work, so i did not measure the distance. I ache almost as much as after my first ever run and the walk only took me just over 40 minutes.(I run it in 30! How slow is that?:()
There look to be some really good websites to look up now and I will do that when I am feeling a bit more with it...How long do chest infections last??????
I will have to get back to running. I bought myself some running shorts on e-bay whilst wrapped up in a blanket and feeling sorry for myself;)(amongst other things.)

Well done to everyone. You all seem to be doing so well. Welcome back to ginszvt and goppers. I had wondered where you were
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D

Parkrun is absolutely brilliant - I go to the Newcastle upon Tyne one and everyone is so friendly. I was last by a long shot my first time but it doesn't matter, the event hadn't been going for long so numbers were pretty small, whereas my sis did the Leeds one where they regularly get 250+ runners every week. She's now helped to start one in Bradford get going - third week this week!

Did my Week 6, Run 2 earlier. Quite enjoyed it but found it tough, no idea how I'm going to manage my 25 minute run on Wed!

Hi. I did my first week 3 run this morning. Actually its my 4th week, but I did more than 3 of each of the first 2 weeks runs (am doing Mon, Weds, Fri). To be honest, I have been taking things a bit cautiously as until I started this I really hadn't done any exercise for a very long time. I think I mentioned that I have lost over 3 stone since last October, but probably didn't say that I hit my 50th birthday last November - and have been a bit dubious about suddenly starting a whole lot of exercise. Actually, it's been fine, and I feel loads healthier. But I had been a bit worried about starting in the first place. (I think the last time I did any running was probably over 30 years ago  )

I had a go at this but it seemed to bring up wuite a tough program and that was on the beginners level.
That's the website that told me I should only be running 25-30 mins to train for my half marathon. That's not even my 5k!

I did gateway to 8k week 2 tonight. It said it was house music so I thought I'd hate it, but I didn't. The music really helped propel me up the hill. I started running about 20 seconds too early again, and I stretched the last run into 9 mins rather than 8. But I reached the halfway point of my 5k route after 2 runs and 1 walk, which means it was about a 32 min 5k time. Seems awfully fast, but somehow I can do it.

You do. Don't you remember volunteering to try the freeway to 10k programme? Actually, the first week of that sounds easier than the 8k programme, as the intervals are shorter although there's more of them.

As long as you're enjoying what you're doing there's nothing wrong with doing more than 3 runs. It will be better for you to do it and achieve it than push on too soon and not be able to finish. But you're not too old - there's someone in Women's Running magazine who runs marathons at 76!

I feel so much better after reading this! I was going to do week 3 run 3 this morning but its freezing again:mad: and I just didnt want to get out of bed! I have been doing some serious gardening over the past couple of days too and burnt myself out:o
Kids back to school and me back to my routine tomorrow so I will be out running no matter what the weather does...I think I am going to repeat week 3 for this week (well do an extra 2 runs) as I really struggled with my breathing on the last run on friday. I want to improve that because my legs are good to go a bit further .....:D

    Well done to everyone btw:j
