I was pushing toward 20 stone when I started trying to shift the weight (long story - I appear to be infertile, can't get NHS treatment till I hit their BMI guideliness, can't even get the plumbing properly checked - so have a LOT of weight to lose). Tried to start this back last year - made three runs and nearly died... couldn't get through it - took me about 3 months of doing other stuff to get to a point where I was fit enough to clear week 1 (and I almost cried when I did).

Might be worth trying starting with 30 second runs, and add the other 30 seconds on to an extra long recovery walk - then go to 45 seconds and so on. Or run every alternate interval, or swap between gentle/brisk walking. That's what people suggested for me - in the end I just went for the give up - come back and have another crack at it programme. With that/other stuff/and yes I have Xenical prescribed by the GP - not going to lie - I lost about 3 stone and 2 dress sizes before I stalled and fell off the wagon.

Is there any scope to run at lunch from work?

It's much easier to get up and leave the office for a run than it is to get off the couch and leave the house :)

Oh I'm not sure I could cope with the people in the office seeing me in my running clothes :o

Week 1 run 3 completed today - was difficult to get up as I've been woken at 3am the last 2 days on call. Am really pleased I did it though. Ticklepenny - don't give up just do what you can of week 1 and repeat until you can do the whole week one. You've started a long journey, good luck.

oh dear. Well this morning I finally got up early enough to do week 1 run 1! I have discovered that I am horrendously unfit. The first running interval I had a go at.. more of a jog but I thought I should pace myself, 45 secs in I wouldnt have been able to talk but the voice tells me I should still be able to talk whilst doing this, but I finish my 1st interval then walk through the next 3 getting my breath back. Once I am breathing relatively normally I thought, "I'll give it another go" needless to say I walked the rest.
I am very overweight at 21 stone 12lbs, BMI 47 and body fat of 46%, so I am going to amend this programme slightly to my needs. I needs to do this a bit slower. Infact if I can work out how I am going to record my own podcasts so I can time myself.:rotfl:
Oh well as they say "you never know until you try". I will keep up with this just at a different pace to everyone else. So those of you who are able to complete week 1 run 1 I am jealous, you guys are so lucky! I cant wait to be as fit as you :D

Good for you :T it doesn't matter how long it takes or how you do it, you'll get there in the end :)

I need my treadmill back - tried to do an easy week 1 run outside since I can't get to the gym till the wretched flipping car's fixed and I'm climbing the walls in here.

Well the running's ok - expected it to be so for week 1... but there is nowhere around this part of town that doesn't involve the second part of any route I make being up a stinkingly large hill (we're at the top). If I reverse the route I did today (which works perfectly timing wise)... still that hill crops up, and it's one of those nice soulsappingly long ones that never ends on one side, or a nice cliff face you can see cars slide down all winter on the other.

Grrr... grrrr... and grrrr at the car... goes off to kick tyres.

I would recommend that you forget the jogging bit for now and build up your fitness levels with walking like dizziblonde said. Walking will help build your muscle and joint strength .
It really doesnt matter how long it takes...if you push yourself too hard to begin with you may be tempted to quit:(. Brisk walking instead of the jogging bits of the programme would probably be easier to start with ....and repeat this week as many times as you need to until you feel ready to jog the 60 secs:) lots of us are repeating bits...going back weeks etc.
I am still on week 2 ,3 weeks in because I havent had the time with the school hols but am starting it again on monday...:D But might have to go back to week 1 if it hurts;)
    WE can do this:T.

  • Well done skintlass, chipps and maisy_daisy.

Great advice dizziblonde Drea and bertiebots I agree with all of you. Don't worry ticklepenny all of us have struggled to get this far. The hardest thing is to start at all:D

    Juno the shoes look amazing.

sammy_girl I'm with you on the morning runnning. I just get up sneak a cup of coffee and then I'm out of the door.
Well I walked about 5 miles last night and I've done about three this morning. 25 minute run tomorrow:eek:
    Keep going everyone.
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D
  • Wheet woo Juno!! Them's some pretty unusual looking shoes! Are they more comfortable than normal trainers?

 ticklepenny I echo dizziblonde and bertiebots - just stick to the walking for now to build up your general fitness, it burns just as many calories walking a mile as it does running one, it just takes a bit longer to get there!

I didn't have such a great day yesterday myself, I tried my second run yesterday and couldn't finish it! :( As well as that, I think the e-mail program I signed up for has given my hotmail a virus!

So a change of plan for me methinks! I'm going to get out and do a fair bit of walking between now and the weekend, then on Monday I'm going to have a go at starting with the podcasts. I'm also thinking I might try running on the treadmill rather than outside - obviously it's easier so there might be more chance of me surviving week 1 if I do it that way!!

Oh and well done to Chipps, skintlass and maisy_daisy for completing the next run! :)

    xx

I feel it in my right calf more than usual today, but this might also be because I ran twice in 2 days (I think) rather than having a rest day
