linz - many contributors here swear by using a food log, either a notebook, diary, or an online tool. I like foodfocus.com because it's free, uses UK brands and has most supermarket own brands too, and I can create recipes on it and use my homemade meals broken down into portion sizes or 100g, etc., it also has a 'dashboard' where you can log in your exercise for the day, and it gives a nice graphic to show the food intake/energy consumed, daily rate. If you have an iphone I know they have apps to do this too. Eric uses a fancy programme I know, but he's far more geeky than me!

Missy or Eric will no doubt advise you later about the BMR. Missy has mentioned before about undereating being the thing that she discovered that stopped her losing, and by upping her food intake, and tweaking it constantly she can lose/maintain. See how you go with your window of 1500/1600, and adjust it as you go along each week perhaps?

    Thanks so much sary
Just input all my details into foodfocus to sign up and my daily calorie intake on there says 1416 :)
Oooo I like it, think it is going to be easier, thanks again!

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome - I KNEW I had come to the right place after lurking since Easter :-)

I aim for 1350 calories per day - all hand prepared, nothing "officially" out of packets except the wild catch up days which can involve inhaling whole packets of junk :-(

Many thanks for the tips - I am off to investigate foodfocus.

Oh - and hope your son settles down soon again Sary, you've handled it very diplomatically without getting him into deep trouble with the school.

Pud_ding HShello2.gifLiked your comment about inhaling - my OH used to ask me if I actually managed to taste my food it went down my throat so fast.

Sary some people should just learn to mind there own business. I wonder how they would have felt if their kid had moved into yours. Sending you hugs.

Ok I now have an insentive (SP?) OH and I are gonna book a holiday at the weekend so i have a date to lose my weight for - better dust off the trainers and the food focus site

Eric - I'm sorry you're having a tough time. Are you struggling with your gym work, or are you having other physical problems? Whatever it is, I hope you get through it. The journey may be rough, but the destination should make it worthwhile. Stay strong.

gym work is a problem, but mainly in that im not allowed to do much any more ... Im sure it will all work its way out in the wash, will just have to keep me fingers crossed that it can be sorted out.

one good thing, got me bloods back and there superb, just goes to show eating lots of healthy oils really does help, dont listen to the no fat / oil bullpat, 33% of my cals come from healthy oils and nuts now.

    Sodium 136 133-146
    Potassium 4.8 3.5-5.0
    Cholesterol 4.3 < 5.0
    HDL 0.99 < 1.2
    LDL 2.8 < 3.0
    Trigylcerides 1.2 < 1.70

not bad for someone who had a BMI of 62 at the start of Jan this year, after spending 10 years on the pizza, curry and chocolate diet :)

I’m female, a stone over weight and have lost and gained the same 2-4 pounds a hundred times over since turning 40.

I diet for 3-4 days then eat extra the next day to cancel out any progress.

You seem such a positive, supportive bunch – can I join please. I need a “public” place make me accountable for my food intake and weight.

What day is weight in please and thanks for reading!

welcome, we will give as much help as we can, 1 stone should fly off :j

I do think to be completely accurate I should get myself a heart rate monitor, any tips where I can buy a good one?

Also, do you all calorie count every single thing that passes your lips...this is what I am planning on doing starting tomorrow, and I am not optimistic! I think it's going to be hard :(

    AL xx

I would only get a HRM if you are planning on exercising a few times or more every week and you want to make sure that you are exercising in an efficient zone or that you are not overdoing it.

All diets be it atkins, weight watchers etc regardless of what they tell you only work by creating a calorie deficit, some diets do this by giving you odd food combinations to eat or making you sick of food, other diets like WW or SW do it in a way that's far more easier to follow by using points or syns rather than calories. The principle is the same in all of them thou, eat less calories than you burn and you will loose weight. However go to far and you just shut your metabolism down.

I personally calorie count, I dont like guestimating how much I have had but I am pretty anal, I have a little program for my phone that allows me to enter all the data in.

eric gave me a link back on page 29 i used and it came very close to the calorie forcast from a nutrionalist for a person with an average metabolism like me.

linsey i would highly recommended against the splits-you only get one pair of legs for life and its an unatural movement --i have avoided the rowing machine for the last 3 days and stopped doing breast stroke in the pool and i am gradually getting back to normal but will get it seen to when i can raise my wife's enthuiasm-i dont speak the local lingo here and rely on her to do my bidding.
Welcome pud-ding--it hs been invaluable to my enthusiasm to diet being here--i am very competitive and like goals to loose weight and the weekly weigh in helps me focus-i am hitting my targets and my appetite has shrunk -i was a pig before but that has changed!
