İ was wondering--should weight loss get easier as i get fitter --

I'd say probably not - assuming you are eating the same amount then the lighter you become, the less of a deficit you'll have between maintenance and intake (meaning each kg takes a bit longer to lose).

With exercise, the fitter you become, the fewer calories you'll burn over the same workout, so you need to up the ante to burn the same amount of calories. So you'll be working harder for the same result. This isn't as bad as it sounds, because obviously the fitter you are, the more your body will tolerate anyway :).

Eric is right about muscle gain, you'll be doing yourself a big favour if you can increase your muscle and maintain the increase, BUT to build muscle at the optimal rate you need to be consuming approx 20% more calories than you need for maintenance, combined with your resistance training programme. If you are restricting calorie intake, you are unlikely to make more than minimal muscle gains (and may even lose some if you restrict your calories by more than 15%).

ahh yeah i forgot about the plateau business

this is of course an issue, as you loose weight you need less calories to maintain your new weight (mines dropped by 500cals a day!), however most people find that they get fitter and stronger as they exercise and so do more work and use more calories which normally balances the reduction in calories needed.

id argue categorically about gaining muscle however, i have put a huge amount on, SWMBO bet me i couldn't pick her up this morning (shes still got 3 stone to loose) I picked her up with ease, it was like lifting a bag of spuds :)

if your eating the right nutrients and a good stream of protein there's no reason why the body shouldn't take the extra energy it needs from stored fat, not the ideal way but it works, well for me but i have a genetic dispensation to get big.

the hardest part i find is making sure i don't run out of energy during a session, i do carb load to an extent but its not enough, when i finish a session I couldnt pick up a bag of sugar..

I am only a few months into my strength training program but its going well but still a very long way to go

Hes one of my hand weights :)

Fair enough - I can't argue with someone's real life experience! :D I guess the point is the 'building blocks' for the extra muscle needs to come from somewhere, just working the muscles alone won't do it, they need feeding with the correct stuff :). If you're lucky enough to have a body where the maintenance needs are readily taken care of by fat stores and you can use your intake to grow muscle, then you're no doubt onto a winner!

My info comes from The Complete Guide to Strength Training by Anita Bean - I think you would really like this book Eric (even if you disagree with parts of it ;)).

    Hi all,

been off the wagon the last two days, but day number one yet again is today. Off to thy gym for pilates in a bit.

De1amo I think that the fitter you get the easier you find exercise so the more you do - so in that sense it should help speed up the weight loss. but the others are right about the plateau issue.

When is WI day? I'd like to join as I now have a goal - 6lb loss by 1st June. Do you guys think that's realistic?

    Kx

6lb loss in more than 2 months yes double without a doubt:D

Survived work today the supervisor was commenting on my handwriting and just said 'it is appalling':D when I asked her who says something like that to someone she said me I say that, not something I would do, the boss heard and said to me are you two bonding? When I told him he was shocked, hey ho that is the way she is, blunt, rude, to the point, honest, cruel, bully whatever way you address the title still comes out the same, think before you speak:rotfl:

Happy weekend to eveyone - weather here is gorgeous again so my washing is drying in double quick time and I'm off the the local car boot sale tomorrow to get some plants for the new stone pots I bought half price last night :D DD is even doing the ironing for me - does it get any better than this?

Just back from my last but one OU tutorial, one more to go, then my last assigment (on Shakespeare ) then a revision day school, then my exam in June.

We've got the swimathon tonight, so I've been carbing-up all day, cereal this morning, sugar-free baked beans on toast for lunch. Just need a quick carb snack mid afternoon and I'm all set. I'm going to have a break from my Sunday morning aqua class - hence the reward of my first visit of the year to the CBS instead!! :D

It's realistic if you're gonna commit to it. It's just over 6 weeks away, so in theory 1lb a week. Seriously doable. Unless your name is mazza, which means as soon as u lose 2 lbs you turn into a little pig with a sweet tooth :rotfl:
    4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j

Oh dear I think i might be a Mazza then! Will try really hard to stick to it - the sunshine helps a lot as when it's sunny I dont want to eat lots I just want to be outside having fun! (shame when you work in an office though!)

Victory -sorry your supervisor is a bully, I had a manager like that once, she was rude and unreliable and tried to stitch people up. Higher up management found out eventually but not soon enough - just have to rise above it in the meantime and know that you are a better person.

What a lovely day we have had!! Went to pilates (very good for my non-existant core muscles apparently!) and had a back massage afterwards which was a lovely treat, then sat outside the pub in the sun til dinnertime. :)

i did some calorie sums for the first time yesterday--it was a rest day off the gym and i struggled to reach a 1000 calories---still loosing weight so i must have a nice store of the fat stuff lol--i am now wearing tee-shirts from last summer that no longer stretch across the bulge!--i can get pure protein relatively cheaply -fish and chicken--so today i had half a small chicken an hour after i went to the gym for 3 hours--is 1 hour too soon after exercising??
hope your all enjoying the sun--save some for me when i return in june-july time!-Greg
    mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.
