apart from my fitness i have led this disllusion that i will be able to play squash-tennis --5 a side--the list is endless of the things this gym offers- and i used to be up to all of them!-up til the smoking ban here in turkey they allowed smoking in most areas of the gym and even served alcohol around the indoor and outdoor pools!!--the cliental are the remenants of this era--i was put off joining because my wife told me what it was like but hopefully a 'cleaner' more healthy generation is being 'born' -doesnt make me feel so bad knowing that the majority of the people here smoke and i am just fat and smokless!!-i am a teacher of English and during the books they have written passages about 'life fitness' and Turks never come out well in the fitness questionaires--since i started doing that passage i have cut out drinking--eaten more fish--meditate--and more veg--i am scoring about 16 out of 20 now--the students top score is about 12 with some as low as 3---it has inspired me to loose weight!!---i own my belly and only i can change it!

Morning:D nowhere near as warm as yesterday but still door is open, OH is fixing the shower we bought yesterday triton cara we bought and for some reason they had the 8.5kw and the 10.5kw £3 difference so we went for the higher one, OH knows nothing about showers but he is determined to get it working, makes me laugh my eldest said we had house bound him as he could not have a shower and wash his hair, when I pointed out the taps work and he could bend over to them he went spare:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:oh the spoilt brat:rotfl: we have that to fix, the shed roof to fix as it leaks water which OH is also doing today and to call someone to replace some double glazing windows that have misted up internally and especially the kitchen one can't see out of:rotfl:that OH is not doing:D I phoned one from the internet, he said £ then asked for half of it before he had even come round to look at it or do the work, I PANICKED and said could not find my card and he said he would call back in 5 mins which he did but OH took the call and told him no., no way were we going to pay for work that had not even begun:eek:

I can remember, when i was a little girl, when we didn't have a shower and the way to wash your hair was either with your head under the tap or with cups of water. Getting your head under the tap was tricky --- perhaps you could sell it to your DS as an extreme sport - a kind of gymnastics for your neck.

PS Thank you Missy and Beanie. You are both absolutely right and I will get back on track .... but not today. That's what I say every day.:o:(:o:(

  • Victory - your tales of your eldest always make me laugh. You should have seen our 21yr old lodgers face when I told hom there would be no hot water until Tuesday evening (from last friday). Absolute horror and confusion. I gently suggested hot water from the kettle and a jug or he could shower round a mates house....he decided to go home for the weekend:rotfl:. Meanwhile OH and I have been happily using a kettle and jug and focussng on how much we are saving by not having the boiler working:D.
Beanie - you are right, it is very:eek:. And no deebee, I'm afraid house ins doesn't cover boilers. We have just been very unlucky and ripped off and there is little we can do about it. I am contacting trading standards tomorrow, but it took my OH 10 secs on line to find reams of complaints about this company (ferolli) identitcal to ours, so we hold out no hope of compensatiopn. I have squirrelled away enough savings in the emergencies pot, but it will take a lot to refil it. We could battle on and keep trying to get action from Ferolli but we have come to the conclusion (and advice from local boilerman) that this would be throwing good money after bad. In 6 weeks they have booked 3 appointments (all dayers so each time i have had to take a days unpaid leave)and still not turned up with the any parts. And know it has flooded inside it need £'s more work doing to it.
Vix - take note in you fantastic plans to save for a house of your own - always plan for emergencies and the unexpected because they do happen.

Granny - I've been doing that: just hoovering up anything in sight because I can. Fortunately, being sick this week seems to have broken that pattern so far.
De1amo - great to hear you sound so motivated. A reality check is no bad thing at this stage, but men have a good record of losing weight if thet stick to their pln. They always lose quicker than women. And 3 months isn't long in the grand scheme of things to give your self a fantastic gift to your heart.

Eric - you have improved dramatically if in Jan you struggled to get up stairs:T

Louise -that is really great to hear you have gone back to sw proper:T:T. Meal planning is definitely the key I think with any weight loss plan. I used to belong to an sw club. I found it helpful as a focus and motivation for the weigh in. I am not doing sw at the mo purey coz I seem to have lost my mojo. But if I was going to follow any plan, it would be that one as it fits into my life style for me(and works).

Hezza - hope the essay is going well.

    Mazza - that wasn't a dream, that was a nightmare:eek:.

Another lovely day today (weather-wise), all my washing is dry, just got to get it ironed now :p

I haven't started writing the essay yet tho' I have lots of notes and think I know what my angle is going to be, so hopefully once I start typing it'll flow like it did last time (and I got my highest mark of the course so far for i t:D). I've been on the OU chat forums for the last couple of days and lots of people on my course are having difficulties tackling this assigmnent (its due in this week) so the message boards have been lighting up; I'm taking a perverse kind of reassurance from this, that I'm not alone in finding it a challenge. :o

Just got back from my aqua-aerobics session which is probably the last time I will be near a pool before our mammoth sponsored swim next Saturday (100 lengths/ 2.5k ). When I signed up 3 months ago in the knowledge that I'd let my swimming sessions slip a bit I though "oh no probs, plenty of time to get back into it" - but no, I've been going less and less so now I'm very nervous about completing the distance at all let alone doing it in a reasonable time. The only thing spurring me on is that people have been sponsoring me so I mustn't let them down. I went for a bit of a training session last Monday and it took me 43 mins to do 50 laps, so my DS (who is doing it with me and swims for a club) will be sitting on the side of the pool waiting for me to finish for a long time! :D The last time I did it (3 years ago) I did find that with so many people there the old adrenalin gets going and I did my distance in a very quick time (for me that is) so I'm hoping the same with happen this time :)

De1amo - When I 1st started at a gym, I'd not done any physical exercise since school. I felt rather daunted at the prospect of going, but my OH has always gone to the gym 3 times a week, so I started off with him. However, he does only weights, apart from his warm-up, so I was down the cardio end dripping sweat, then doing a 20 min weights routine. Initially I felt it was a huge uphill battle, and looked at the people running, and thrashing away for 20 mins at high reps on the eliptical machine or rower, and thinking I could never be like that. But, week by week, I improved. I started to make myself targets to hit, and I passed them. It definitely helped my weightloss, and changed my shape quickly. Before I knew it, I was progressing from walking on an incline, to tentatively doing some jogging for a minute at a time. The day I ran non-stop for 20 minutes, not gasping for breath, but coping at a steady pace, was an amazing day for me. I'd row 1500m in 9 mins @ level 9, cycle over 8km in 8 mins, but initially was doing about 3km in 10 mins. Twice a week I did an abs hardcore workout too. It was hard work, but it all paid off.... then the aircon at the gym broke, and everytime I tried to workout I felt faint with the heat. It took too many months to repair it (council run) my routine was gone, and I didn't renew my membership because of the inability to use the facilities at the time. I wish I could afford to go now. I will one day.
Stick with it, take it at a steady pace, and combined with your new healthy eating, you will see the results sooner rather than later. It's funny how cultures have different levels of health. We perceive Mediterranean countries to all have much healthier lifestyles, but whenever I've visited such countries, I have noticed that the older generations tend to look somewhat portly/overweight, and smoke, just as they do at home here. I lived in Belgium for a couple of years, in a city, and the overwhelming smell at tea time was of the home deep fat fryers heating up. I lived in an apartment backing onto a larger set of apartments, and out on their back balconies in the early evening would go the chip fryers to cool down! That's my abiding memory of the place, along with them drinking lots of alcohol. The architecture was nice tho'.

Tagz, my knee is still playing up. I've no idea what the problem is, but it's rather annoying trying to kneel to put bedding plants in, when your knee doesn't feel comfortable to bend.

It's not stopped me getting on with things, and I spent 7 hours gardening yesterday. It's a bit chilly out there today, but that's OK, I can still skulk away into the greenhouse. I have a bit of baking to get on with today, so will do that, although I'm concerned it was the static standing in the kitchen making birthday cakes, etc., that have aggravated it.

    - how's your mobility now? Have you seen any improvements since using a stick? Could that be part of the reason you're struggling to find focus, or is it the impending changes career-wise? I guess it's a fairly momentous time giving up full-time work? My eldest sister took early retirement at 58, and wondered how she'd ever fill her days, and if she'd made a mistake. As it turned out, she now wonders how she ever found the time to go to work. Getting the chance to see her now is nigh on imossible, unless I book several months in advance.

Have started the day well, with a big bowl of porridge. Planning a roast chicken dinner later, but will steer clear of the roast potatoes this week. Little inroads to making a bigger impact I hope.

I am visiting my friend next week who has a history of weight gain/loss/gain. I mentioned last year how her local hospital has a new campaign to help people like her, that has a team of 10 people heading up (psychologist, physio, nutritionist, etc.), and it sounded fabulous, but then the reality is that no appointments come through, and she was told her next one would be maybe a year away! Great in theory, but useless in practice. No doubt millions of £ on the NHS are being pumped into this new initiative, but it'll end up a complete failure. She's been doing her own thing again, using pre-made meals, to help her lose weight. She has deep-rooted issues emotionally with food, and whilst having a good insight into why she eats, or overeats (happy, sad, angry, positive... any emotion is a trigger), she can lose control very easily. A bit like Eric mentions with caffeine and sugar being triggers, she's very aware that they do trigger her massively into huge episodes of eating. I worry whenever I visit what phase she may be in, as if it's an over-eating phase I find it quite distressing to both witness, and almost feel I'm being encouraged to do the same, and support her do so. If anything, it makes me feel I need to eat less around her to be a positive influence. A bit like being with an alcoholic and being teetotal to show them it can be done!

I have to try to get more exercise in my daily routine - I know that when I exercise it makes me far more focused on my food so a win-win situation :j. Time is the main problem at the moment - and the fact that I'm so shattered in the evening when I would normally put on an exercise DVD to do I end up having a doze in the chair :o. I know though that if I do more exercise I'll have more energy to do more exercise. I just need a kick start.

Mum and I went for a walk yesterday which was great but Mum has problems with her leg so it's more of a dawdle than a walk :( but it was nice to get out on such a glorious day :)

Will be rubbing down and painting the garage door at Grandad's house this afternoon so hopefully some good upper arm exercise today. It's taken us nearly 2 years to get it into rentable condition  but hopefully in 3 or 4 more weeks (gardener permitting ) we'll be finished and able to get tennants.

Hope everyone has a chance to enjoy some good weather.

BTW who is the bra expert - could do with some advice (sorry gents ;))

Seem to be slipping this week. Meals are fine and mostly snacking on fruit, but have had a couple of major chocolate sessions. Also, as per usual when at home, am struggling to get out exercising. I enjoy running but its not that easy round here...i know excuses, excuses. I'm really looking forward to moving and being able to run along the seafront I've always loved that.

    .

Oh they do, they come in great clumps, expensive ones:D the shower is fixed and working, crisis over:rotfl: crumbs he would have hated my childhood where we did not have a washing machine and so my mum used to put the clothes in the bath and we were expected to walk up and down them to clean them whilst having a wash:D

The fence panels have been water proofed for another year, the drain cover has been replaced, the curtain rails have been re-done(kids yank them off their hinges drawing the curtains) all that is left is to get the panel for the shed roof tomorrow and fix that and call someone in for the window replacements, I must say OH has been at it all day and he is a very special man, not one complaint but my eldest OMG, slave labour, you make up jobs for me, this does not have to be done, I am not even allowed out, on and on with the moaning:rotfl:
