Beat me to it...I add turmeric to make it yellow,a cardamon pod,dried chili pod,clove & some Five Spice powder.When it's cooked,I stir in some frozen peas,diced pepper,mushrooms that has been lightly fried in olive oil to soften & sliced up plain omelette.0 -

Due to a minor miscalculation in my monthly electric bill I am stuck now with 17 days to pay day and no money.
Not really an issue as I have some frozen meat and lentils / dried beans etc.
I have done a menu planner for the whole time and have come to a couple of days where I really need to use rice but not as a side dish cos I have nothing meat or major veg wise to go with it.
Does anyone make a whole meal with rice as the main ingredient ? I have onions and tinned toms plus some spices and mixed herbs ( nothing else in the herb front now) garlic and peas.
There must be something I can do with rice, can anyone help ?There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

What about a veggie Paella, a pilaf, a biriyani. They are all rice based.
There are some ideas here:

arancini?
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/arancini/detail.aspx not my recipe but google's first offering. Lots of things can go in the middle, a little left over ragu and cheese works well but your toms, mixed herbs would be fine I think...a little cheese would improve it.
No veg/left over small bits of meat you can make a strfry with to have with the rice? that would be good.0 -
Like the sound of Arancini but I don't have half the fixing..No breadcrumbs, no flour, no eggs ..That is the problem lol
I will though try it next month when I have been shopping.
As for pilaf and biriyani..they all seem to need other things to go with it.
I have a roasted pepper risotto for this week but after that I am down to just a squash and a bag of peas..That has to do 17 days so I am limited with what I can add to what.
I also have a leftover chicken curry down with rice but that will see the end of the chicken I should think.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

Kedgeree - add quartered hard boiled eggs, any flaked-up fish (meant to be smoked something or other but tuna works) and as much/little curry powder as you need.
Edit: oops just seen no eggs!0 -
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Once a week we have fried rice for dinner, I start off with frying an onion then chuck in anything that's lying about, chicken or bacon, sweetcorn, peas, mixed veg then add cold already cooked rice and a splash of soy sauce. It's a lovely, filling, quick dish and you can chuck anything in with the rice.Dum Spiro Spero0

Fried rice? I do this for weekday lunches: Steam a huge bowlful, chill and fridge, then at lunchtime each day I fry off whatever veg there are in the fridge (onions for you, spring onions/ carrots/ peppers/ sweetcorn etc) and plop in the rice and a load of herbs and/ or spices and fry. Finish with shredded lettuce or cucumber sometimes, grated cheese, seasoning, whatever's there really. It changes so much from day to day! I do it with couscous too if I'm having a tight week.They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0
