You need one of those old fashioned ones like the cooks wore which had a skirt that met at the backhttp://hub.tv-ark.org.uk/images/drama/drama-series_s-z/upstairsdownstairs1971gl.jpg

I have two, a lovely Cath Kidston one which I won and a Domestos one that I got free by saving tokens. The Domestos one is a plastic one which I sometimes use while cleaning and the CK one I really should use while I'm cooking but I don't because it's nice and I don't want to stain it (I know, I know! :rotfl: ).
MrS thinks I look ridiculous in my pinny but that may be because last weekend while chopping up wood I was wearing green wellies, my pale blue apron, a khaki woolly hat and a large navy coat (as well as regular clothes before anyone thinks I was in the nuddy!). I'm sure I looked gorgeous!0 -

I have two aprons hanging on the back of the kitchen door. I tend to forget about them until I've covered myself in flour; then I think "Should have put me pinny on!"Refusing to Sit Down & Shut Up since 19740

Oh dear, I feel a bit of a freak now, I thought wearing an apron was normal! I don't feel 'right' if I am cleaning or cooking without wearing one. I started wearing one in the 80's when I ruined so many nice clothes with oil splashes. I don't really have 'scruffs' just normal day clothes and nicer ones for dressed up. I am 54 so that probably explains it!Slightly bitter0

Don't feel a freak Dianne, there's still plenty of us that wear a pinny! I think apron wearing is making a bit of a comeback. There's a nice book out that goes through some of the history of aprons and includes patterns for a number of different styles.

Well, I wear an apron whether it's cool or not. I have done so for the last forty years. A waist apron protects my skirts whilst cleaning and provides a pocket for my handkerchief. I make my aprons from remnants of curtain material so they're pretty sturdy and I pick up the pieces for pennies.
When I am doing messy cooking I use a full length (pinafore) PVC to keep me clean.
