Except the OP's son is allergic to egg ;)

Oops - missed that - teach me to read properly! my excuse is that I'd been up since 6.00 am with the small one. Pastry things should be fine - you can sub vinegar for egg in baking - not sure of quantities but I'm sure there has been a thread on here somewhere at some point. I've done it when I've realised part way through I've no eggs. Think it's a spoonful per egg. I'm fairly sure you can also get vegan alternatives to dairy products which should do the trick.

I think I would think of it in terms of meals eaten to try and make sure he had plenty and to come up with suitable foods. So a breakfast (even if he has something before he leaves), a substantial mid morning snack, a lunch, a mid afternoon snack, and a tea. I assume he also has dinner once he gets home.

I would think along the lines of:
Breakfast - muffins or cereal bars/flapjacks (a couple as if it such physical work) with banana
Mid morning and afternoon snacks - digestive biscuits, oatcakes, vegan cheese or nuts, apples and flask of tea. Probably a slice of dense fruit cake too.
Lunch - the usual like sandwiches (basically whatever you usually do)
Tea - a plate pie or pasty, perhaps even with a baked potato to eat alongside (we quite like these cold in a packed lunch)
Love and compassion to all x

Thanks for the thread, some fab ideas on here :) my girls are only diddy, but I'm always looking for new and inspiring ideas for their school butty boxes and picnics out.
I've got dough rising now for calzones for our day out tomorrow filled with passata and small diced steak, shredded chicken, spicy pork, veg, cheese (vegan alternative for your son obv) pepperoni etc. (not all on the same calzone, will do a variety).
they also like mixed bean quesedillas, potato salad, mixed nuts and dried fruit, [STRIKE]olive feta and pepper salad
[/STRIKE] sorry, forgot about the dairy for a min! errrm, can't think what else i do, except vary the breads used for sandwiches.
hubby likes a garlic flatbread wrapped around meat and salad.

what about a nice spiced bulghar wheat salad? i saw this recipe on a website so it’s not my original recipe but it goes something like this
cook some bulghar wheat with veg stock, either cover and cook in microwave or leave to stand for ten mins. then make dressing: a tsp of cumin powder, tsp of cinnamon powder, lemon juice, lemon zest, olive oil, salt, pepper. Add to bulghar wheat. Then add some roasted red peppers, a can of drained chickpeas and some thinly sliced onions and always add lots of coriander or parsley or mint (whichever you prefer). This makes a fabulous filling lunch. I always have this with some bbq chicken wings.... and my friends always ask for recipe.

how about melton mowbray style pork pie which is made with hot water pastry rather than butter pastry - I live near melton mowbray and they are always a hit with visitors - you can get them in most supermarkets now I've certainly seen them in tesco and waitrose

Thanks for the fantastic ideas everyone - I have a food flask on the way which will be a big help. Loving the idea of a picnic pie - i've never found porkpie type things that are dairy/egg free but will make my own.

He does eat loads when he's home - cereal and bacon sandwiches in the early hours for breakfast - a huge box of food away with him, massive dinner and pudding, soup and something for supper an hour or so later before bed so he isn't starving, just bored!!!!

    Hi everyone,

Would anyone be able to offer me some cost-effective pack up ideas for me to make my OH?

He walks miles a day, so needs something fairly easy to eat on the go but with enough fuel in them to keep him going. All I seem to have fed him is sandwiches of the ham or cheese or egg variety and a bag of crisps! Not good and if I were him I'd be getting pretty bored of it! Plus I'd like to shoehorn in something healthy if I could.

Total brainblock on this one and recipe websites aren't yielding much inspiration so help would be much appreciated!

    Thanking you in advance! x
