Money Moral Dilemma: Should Janet pay John’s tip?

It would be extremely bad manners, not to mention a breach of etiquette for Janet to look at, offer to contribute to or comment in any way upon the bill and lack of tip, which on this occasion is the responsibility of her dining companion.0

If she feels like paying the tip then she should just do it. He shouldn't see it as her being critical and if he does he's just an idiot.
I was in China Town the other day and the bill had a 10% service charge added so I didn't leave a tip. Plus the service wasn't very good. Actually I should have asked them to remove it!!! They took the mick!!0 -
Lurleene has it spot on - "as you've been so kind getting the bill at least let me cover the tip"
If she wants to, why not. Just be a bit tactful.0 -
The whole tipping thing's a massive guilt trip, personally I'd rather have the cash in my pocket.0

After John has paid for the meal, I (if I were Janet) wouldn't want to act in an ungrateful manner by offending him. I'd ask if John minded, as he paid, if I left a tip. If he adds the tip there and then (or offers a reason as to why the waiter wasn't worthy of a tip), then all well and good. If not, I'd discreetly leave a tip when John's not looking.
Also, if I'd had a proper sit-down meal with John, I'd hopefully have some hints as to whether or not he is an ill-mannered a*se. If he is (an a*se), I'd leave the tip discreetly without having the conversation and John would not probably not get a second date!
Unless the waiter has been openly rude or slovenly, he deserves his tip and our thanks.0 -
Wow
What a thing NOT to agonise over...
If it was me I would say 'Do you think we should leave a tip?'
Then - 'You've paid for the meal, I'll do it''.
Is this not what first dates are about? Finding out about each other?
If such a small thing causes major problems, time to call it a day.0 -
If Janet paid the bill, she can decide whether or not to tip. If John paid the bill, let him decide.
Tipping is outdated and exploitative; Employers should pay a decent rate for the job and not expect their staff to depend on handouts.0 -
Waitstaff in this country are paid a livable wage, there is no reason to tip. I dislike people begging for money unless there is a service charge then I will not tip. Elsewhere I follow that countries rules.Barclaycard 3800

If John had paid for the meal and Janet were ungrateful enough to quibble whether implicitly or explicitly over his tipping choice then she does not deserve a second date. Give her a lift to the bus stop and try and find someone a little less sanctimonious for future dates. No Personal or Unapproved links in signatures please - FT30

I do it when in America, as I know they're often paid very poorly and it's part of the custom, but I'm not too sure why we're tipping over here. I do tip, as I feel uncomfortable not to, but they must be getting at least minimum wage, and then tax free tips? There are lots of jobs which are minimum wage, where the people don't get extra tips, so I'm not sure why we feel obliged to tip in certain situations (hairdressers, taxi's, restaurants). I always do, as I feel I'm saying that I've recieved bad service if I don't, but it seems so Americanised. If I had bad service, I'd let them know and wouldn't use them again.
Hold on, it depends on where you are. some states, like California, ban tips making up minimum wages.
you also get better servie in the usa, but I still don't feel obliged.0
