Hi, could someone give me a little advice on car hire.
Were going in October when our children will be 4 & 7 and are wondering what we'll need to do about child seats. Both are in booster seats at home but we were wondering if we would need them for both on holiday. I understand that if they are 4 or younger the law states that they need a car seat, would a booster seat cover this for our youngest? Also should we hire this with the car, take one with us or buy one when we are out there.
Has anyone had a similar query? Any leads for cheap car hire would also be good, I have some from previous threads so don't worry otherwise.0 -
I've seen them on the carousels at the airport, so presumably that means quite a few people take their own with them.....
That's as much help as I can give though sorry!0 -

I think it's quite simple - if you use them at home on the way to your departure airport then take them with you!
cheers

From the Florida dept of transport website
4. What is Florida's Child Restraint Law?
All children 5 years of age or younger must be properly restrained no matter where they are sitting in the vehicle. Children through age 3 must be secured in a separate carrier or a vehicle manufacturer's integrated child safety seat. For children aged 4 through 5 years, a separate carrier, an integrated child safety seat, or a safety belt may be used. (FL Statute 316.613).
Hope that's useful for you.:D
personally, we fit my sons car seat onto the plane seat when we fly and then carry it through customs. My son is 2 1/2 (but is the size of a 3 1/2 - 4 year old) and his child seat will last until he is about 7. Also, taking our own car seat saves the cost of hiring one at t'other end.

I have a 3 year old and am taking her car seat when we go, if was going to cost us more than the price of a car seat to hire one so will just pop her through with the luggage and hope it comes though okay at the other end.0

have you not considered taking it on the plane with you, using the lapbelt to
secure it to the seat and popping your 3 year old into it - it works very, very well with my son. They do fit onto airline seats very well.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
This confirms my thoughts about taking one of the seats with us, either on the plane or in the luggage. We plan on starting our Christmas shopping whilst we are there so the space it takes up can be used for this and we'll just leave it in the car on the way back. Should still be much cheaper than hiring.
Thanks guys.0 -

Hi wheelie
if you check it in as part of your luggage, it will count as part of your baggage allowance , belted onto the seat it does not.

We had already asked Virgin if we could take our car seat , they were great and said it will be boxed and put in a fragile area, as there are 5 of us each with a large baggage allowance it's not a problem. They would not allow us to take it onboard though which is probably just as well as we will most likely end up playing musical seats,0

Hi minmouse
that really surprises me, as when I've travelled on other airlines, watching parents fastening in child seats has been a regular thing.
