Feeling low with clutter

I managed to sneak out a bag full of broken toys from my son's room the other day and he hasn't noticed yet. I've had to be stricter about his clutter in the living room after I caught my daughter choking on one of his kinder-egg toys. And the "one box each" rule for toys is working better after I lugged the overspill back up to the kids' bedrooms.0

I soooo envy you your bookcases!!! I am thinking I am a bit sad - some of my books are nearly as precious as my kids! I just thirst for knowledge - I LOVE learning about something.
my light reading i am prepared to pass on - a bit reluctantly - but i will do it if forced to.
my special books i wont - and they must number in the hundreds!
I drive my OH insane - I think he owns one book....and thats the Haynes manual on his current car!
You remind me of me!
I love books and love learning. Every room has books. I get out my maximum quota from the library every few weeks. I come home from car boot sales with oodles of them. I'm also obsessed with magazines, but not girly or gossip mags though. Anything to do with houses and gardens, interior decorating, cooking, psychology, crafts, marketing etc. I'm the person found lurking in the mag section of WH Smith that staff and security would like to move on after an hour!
BUT hubby is the same! Arrgggg!! Cue a house full of books and magazines. In the toilet, up the stairs, by the bath, by the beds, on the landing, on tables, left on the arms of sofas, on windowsills..."carpe that diem"0 -
I've finished sanding and priming some of dd's furniture today.
Crutches - good thinking - I know someone who revised for their A levels by leaving their notes in the loo! He reasoned he would have to visit there several times a day so may as well utilise the time!
Mupette - I'd open the card now but I'm a child in that respect - hate waiting for anything!
Keep it up everyone! :j :beer:0 -
Halfway through the understairs cupboard.
There were 76 shoes in there - along with everything else.
I'm going out to buy a shoe rack later"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

Thankyou for your encouragement.Feeling crap again so dragged self out to a local group where there is a swap table
Put on a load of stuff and took some useful stuff home.A jigsaw puzzle roll will encourage me to sort them without the "have to clear the table excuse"! And a toy/book holder for car journeys will help clutter there too
Mupette I can never wait either.:)Every day above ground is a good one0 -

As for seperating in storage, how about a cheap clothes rail and hanging 3-4 of these on them:

You'd have to like folding to use these well I think but it would mean everything could be easy to see and restore quickly in theright section. You could label each section.
Hi Brighton Belle,
DH went out on Sunday and got 3 of these, and they fit perfectly on the hanging rail we already had. We've got some stuff in it, and it is so much easier - baby is one hand and picking out clothes with the other.
It looks surprisingly good too. DH was not at all keen when I suggested it as it wasn't proper furniture, but he has been won around by its practicality.
Regards clutter our house does descend into chaos on a regular basis. The real beauty for us of decluttering is that if visitors give us 15 min warning, we can very quickly make the place look presentable.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
sorry if i'm repeating myself but i feel better if I can declutter for a good reason.
I keep magazines (review copies + 3 for £1) in a bag to take to my GP or local hospital waiting rooms and a few books in the bag too for the hospital library shelves.
I keep a bag for charity too. And when there is a big appeal eg Haiti I send good s/h books to oxfam for their shops.I search my shelves for these and send good hardbacks if possible. If I get given a book that I really don't enjoy and it is in very good condition (or a £land hardback I'm not keen on) then it goes to the local library.
Freecycle is good too for getting storage and for getting rid of stuff .I also put my postcode into Ebay and search by distance closest to me for shelves/furniture etc.Lots of very cheap things if you can collect them.My pine bed with storage drawers underneath was £20 and my kitchen dressers £10 + £30Now My pots and pans are all in cupboards.
I'd love a dishwasher to store my washing upEvery day above ground is a good one0 -
Cleaned a boot load of rubbish out of my garage today.
And we have another load to go to my mother (she's going to stop answering the door to me soon!).
I wanted to get my gardens sorted before I go away next week - just some spring potting flowers in - I think it will make a big difference.
The weird thing is, since this thread began, I've cleared so much stuff - but I don't seem to be feeling any difference/more positive about it.
I'm thinking that perhaps it's not just the "house clutter" that's getting me down - I been looking at my life over the past two weeks, and I think I also have to start saying "no" more often to people. Not in a bad way - but I do tend to take on alot - which has the same effect as cluttering up your house - it just clutters up your days!"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0
