Had a fantstic day on Saturday at the local guild where I managed to sit and knit for the whole day! (without feeling guilty 'cos I was sitting down and not washing/hanging out washing/ cooking or cleaning)

I managed to do about 45cm of the scarf so it looks like SIL will get it for Christmas. I catching up with you all!!
  • hi Dumpy.

Just being nosey really - what is a guild? I'd kill to be able to spend an entire day knitting *wistful*

I started mine in March, but put it away once the weather got warmer. I'm determined to finish it soon though, so I've set myself a target of a least 5 rows a day while I'm sitting with my cuppa watching breakfast news!

Hi there terminallyshortofcash I'm a member of the local Guild of Spinners and weavers. So one Saturday a month I get "Dumpy time" where I got to the guild day. It's in a local school and we use the staff room. I do sometimes take my wheel and spin all day (very relaxing) but this month I used it to catch up on the knitting. Lots of people there are knitters and spinners but comercial wool is tolerated (big smile here) and we all gossip and compare notes on activities all day.

I find if I'm at home I have a thousand and one things to do so sitting at the wheel or needles or loom just isn't on, but to slip away to the guild gives me a whole day to indulge in what I want to do.

Fairly money saving as well as it's £8 to join for the year and £1.50 for each session with tea and coffee thrown in.

To be honest I'd go stark raving mad if I didn't have this one day a month to look forward to!
  • That sounds like a lovely thing to be a part of, Dumpy. *insert big, green, jealous eyes here* :D I really don't think that we have anything at all like that near here. I've always been interested in spinning and my mum and all her female relations used to work as weavers in the silk mills, but they're all gone now (the mills, not the rellies :p ) Is spinning difficult to learn? I don't think it's going to be an option for me until I get a bigger house - DH is already at his wits end with all my crafty paraphenalia :)

I've always used commercial yarns (ooh, the shame of it!! :) ) but have just found a little shop in the Yorkshire Dales that sells hand spun pure wool skeins without charging a fortune! Have also discovered Lion Brand Yarns - a bit difficult to get hold of but well worth it - even though they're not natural fibres - they have the advantage of being machine washable ;) My local yarn shop isn't too bad - they do some nice silk and angora mixes, but I tend to find that they're a bit lacking in the colour department - they seem to only stock fairly muted colours.

Anyhoo - I'm babbling and should probably get back to work before I get caught on here :)

    Is it a national guild?

A stripey scarf for my dad but I got a bit carreid away & it took on Dr who proportions:rotfl:At least I only dropped one stitch & didnt' need to add loads of ribbions, he wouldn't have thanked me for that!

And now I'm working on a christmas stocking for my son, if it works I plan to make a few more & give a pressies with a small toy in to a few freinds children.

No point me doing fancy fluffy scarves, Hubbys aunt did them for most of the family last year, with matching [STRIKE]teacosys[/STRIKE] hats:o

Oohhh lots of people interested in spinning and weaving I thought I'd be the lone oddbod but obviously not! I'm really interested in your family who were silk weavers, that's fascinating. I'm a real novice weaver and it does provoke a few naughty words when I'm trying to warp the loom..... I'd love to do something in silk but I've only made a couple of tea towels so far (doesn't matter if the shape all goes wrong, they still dry up)

Spinning, I went on a weeks course when I was younger to learn but I have friends who have picked it up themselves with the odd bit of help at a Guild day. Oh and you can get fold away wheels that do take up very little space.........

There is a National Guild of spinners, weavers and dyers. I can't do links but you should find it on a google search and there are links there to a lot of guilds throughout the country. I think you'd be surprised how many there are out there and we are all very friendly. I'm in Wales if anyone is in the Mid/West Wales area.

If you live absolutely nowhere near one there is an online Guild as well, details on the website. There are summer schools and other courses to go on as well.

I have a plan to spin silk for a laceweight shawl which will be appropriate somehow, as by the time I finish it I'll be 103 and need a shawl to sit in my rocking chair.

Right back to this scarf, I have the little cash's label ready to sew in "This was handknitted by dumpy" I bought the minimum order but I think it could be sometime before I use them all up!
