I'd definitely recommend walking around your neighbourhood shouting Charlie's name. You never know, he may just appear from somewhere.

I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of a microchip, provided you keep in contact with the local vets / cat protection league etc they will let you know if he turns up.

    We're thinking of you...

I spent from 8am yesterday (didn't want to start shouting earlier) to nightfall yesterday.

Four of us, DH took the day off work & myself, my daughter & her fiance are off this week (which was lucky).

When my little girl went missing a put up pictures everywhere and got as many of the local children i knew involved, giving them pictures too. I also offered a small reward. After 2 days of searching, some youngsters found her hiding behind a boulder less than 30metres from the house! There had been thunderstorms and i think she got a bit scared.
Keep searching, calling out his name, even shaking a treat box he might know the sound of, or the bell of a toy. Wishing you lots and lots of luck...

I just cried my eyes out, I was telling DH what the RSPCA lady said (& its what I feared too).

I'm never getting another cat again, I can't bear loosing them. I lost Ted not 2 years ago (he just dropped down dead, mid life, fit as a fiddle).

((((hugs)))) When your cat comes back maybe you could cat-proof your garden?

honestly he may be ok, when mine went missing it had been pouring down and mine are far from streetwise, at one point i was looking in a river with a torch at the bottom of the hill for him in tears. There he was mulling round a garage, he came out smelling like a haynes manual.
Don't give up, follow all the advice given here and he may just suprise you, not that they notice you've been worried out of your mind!

Oh Mrs E! I am so sorry to hear that Charlie has gone walkabout at the moment!

However, don't give up hope yet: I had a cat go missing for around 6 weeks on one occasion and had cried buckets, but she came back looking fine but rather dirty and just walked back in on us.

I know just how you feel about the "never having another one" and I say it every time I have had to have one put down (usually whilst sobbing helplessly in the car in the car-park:o) but overall I consider the pain of their loss worth it for the joy of their companionship whilst they are with me.

Have you ever considered keeping them entirely as house cats? Or perhaps having a garden run for them? It seemed a dreadful thing to do to them for me until I had several FIV cats who were a risk to others and not that healthy themselves. They really did not ever seem to mind and were kept clean and well fed with lots of toys to play with and comfy spots to curl up in. They are basically pretty lazy by nature and even when out often spend more time sleeping in a warm spot than actually "doing" anything.

I currently have six who do not go out at all, and four that do because they have been doing so since the road here was quieter. When we have finished our alterations here I intend to have a large run built off the new and larger utility room so that they can have some "fresh air" space, but my friend who already has a similar set-up and a huge, luxury, cat room where her double garage used to be (:D good priorities there;)) says that hers are hardly bothered about the run.

Have a huge hug, and keep your chin up! As others have said, keep checking vets and rescues and calling at food times and evening. I have everything crossed for you that he turns up looking smug at his adventure.

RE the house cat thing, they sort of are, ish. They only go out when we are in, they don't have a flap (hence why I haven't bought the pet porte). Its just a quick outing in the morning (George likes to "go" outside) & then again when I get in from work.

Ted was always a house cat until we moved here, I thought they would be safe here, but a rural location brings other dangers it seems.

Don't think that would be possible, its 115 foot long.
Its in-doors, or with a run or allowed out.

Plus I have a few trees that overhang (a massive oak) & cats jump in from the garage roof of the garage next door, would be murders if cats were jumping in from trees & roofs & couldn't get back out again.
