I don't find their products expensive at all really (even without my partners discount). The basic products are just as good a quility as the own brands and some of them are even fairtrade; bananas, tea, hot chocolate (although I don't drink this), cuppuccino. The thing I really like is that the packaging states what is vegan on their vegan products :D.
I do think they are better like for like than at ASDA and what I remember of Tesco products (do not shop there anymore).
As I eat a lot of fruit and veg I find their produce is a lot fresher and lasts longer.
I guess it depends on what you buy to what would be cheaper for you though.
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy :D

I love sainsburys and i always shop there, you just have to know what to buy in there and what not. I think tescos is really expensive, plus the staff are so rude in the tescos by me i walked out and left a trolly full of items due to the absolute rudeness of their member of staff.

I couldnt find an item so i asked a lady that worked their where something was, she didnt acknowledge me but huffed and dropped the crates on the floor and under her breathe i heard her say 'for f***s sake' and she stomped over to where the item was pointed at it and then walked off.

Thought im not putting up with that, went to the customer service desk to complain about her, the lady there said who is, and she will report them to their team leader, i took her to where she was, pointed her out and the response i got was, thats the supervisor! Was told i would need to complain to head office then, so i walked out!.

    Never shop in their again.
One of the Tescos I go to has a supervisor like that - I usually try and make some sort of "thank you for all your effort when you are so busy", or "when do you graduate from charm school?" comment.

Sorry if this is not a popular opinion with the OP - but

as long as you shop carefully - ie the basics range, then i find sainsburys ok.

I do my main shop at Aldi-Lidl and therefore Sainsburys can be quite a shock price wise. I got a good basket full of stuff for less than £10 on Tuesday this week, but a lot of the prices are just ridiculous for the goods you get.

IMHO no place is a joke, even Waitrose ( yeah i know) has some of the best Whoops items i have ever seen - and their whoops stuff keeps for ages.

For me - the key is to think before you buy, and not buy in to the stores tricks and techniques which make you want to buy more. ( see Money Diet for details :))

Caution is the best policy in Sainsburys

It really surprises me how people tend to criticise Sainsbury's when, in my opinion, Sainsbury's is cheaper than most places that I check. It is true that Sainsbury's fresh food is expensive (fruit, vegetables, etc) but only compared with the weekly promotions in Lidl -- and Lidl's fruit and vegetables are less tasty and less fresh than Sainsbury's. Tesco and Asda cost the same or more (I do check).

I find that on everything else that I buy, Sainsbury's is cheaper than Lidl. If it is cheaper in Lidl, than it isn't as good as in Sainsbury's, and there are things that are really crap in Lidl (like the wraps that break all over when you try to fold them). The only exception (for me) is tissues, which are cheaper in Lidl and good quality.

Comparing with Asda, Sainsbury's is cheaper in most products and the quality of Sainsbury's own brand is, by far, much better than Asda's. I still can't believe that once I bought tinned tomatoes from Asda yuk!

Everytime I go to Tesco, I see that nothing is cheaper than in Sainsburys. Tesco's own brand tinned tomatoes are also not good and things like beans etc are nothing like the ones from Sainsbury's. Kitchen roll is awful compared with Sainsbury's basics.

Off course, this is my experience and this is true for the products I buy. And this has to be the case for many others. Thus, I don't see the point in starting threads like this criticising a supermarket that beats many of the others in price, quality, integrity, respect for the environment and customer service.

The funny thing is that supermarkets were more popular than your high street store as you could get EVERYTHING under 1 roof.

Back to the high street it seems LOL

I agree with afm - I haven't been to Lidl in ages, and I went there recently and was amazed at how expensive it was, when compared to Sainsbury's. The fruit and veg weren't nearly as good either, and there really wasn't a lot of difference price wise. Quite a few 'branded' items were a lot more expensive too. Maybe Aldi is cheaper, but to me, Lidl definitely doesn't seem much like a budget supermarket any more.

I think that depends on the area and the size of the store.
In our Sainsburys, you cannot even buy FRESH vegetable and fruit. You might get couple of bananas if you are lucky.

However, in Ashton there is biger and nicer Sainsburys. But I am not driving to Ashton when I have huge fully stocked Tesco around the corner..

As for own brand.. I am not big fan of any own brand apart from fridged stuff so I cannot comment on that.

    Hi there,

I think it depends on your location, what you buy and you are personally. I prefer Sainsbury's and i do think it is actually quite cheap for what i buy. I do tend to buy the basics range, cheese, lots of flour, meat but also fair trade products. I did my monthly bulk buy shop a few weeks ago, checked it out mysupermarket and sainsburys came out cheapest by a whopping £25 (Asda £50). I trottled into the local store and spent £27.95 and got everything i needed. Tesco, Asda and Morrisons are far too expensive for me, if i had to shop at them i'd be penniless, especially with the amount of fair trade and eco friendly products i buy.

Our local sainsbury's is brilliant, very friendly, clean unlike tesco, yes i found sick all over the floor in a fresh meat aisle. Know what staff said "just walk round it, it'll be fine". I promptly left the building. Not a happy shopper.

In the end, whichever supermarket it is, the customer service of the individual store is down to the Branch Manager. If he/she is sloppy and doesn't care, then the staff won't bother either. I don't know how important customer training is to the various Head Offices but I think we all should make it our responsibility to report anything that offends us as shoppers. Not just to the local manager, but to the head office. As a nation, we'd rather moan to each other than complain properly.
