Where do Sainsburys get off on thinking they are so much better than other supermarkets

No idea, Waitrose is far superior.
  • Yeh i could understand Waitrose or Marks and Spencer being a bit dearer as their products are that little bit superior.

But Sainsburys sell the same stuff as Tesco, Morrisons and Asda but still seem to hark back to the dingy old beige coloured shop days when they were No 1 and believe they are still there.

I know to get the best shop you could be going backwards and forwards to all the big players for different items

but why pay 70p 80p or even over £1 more for the same item.

I suppose whilst shoppers are buying other more reasonably priced items they slip a few of the overpriced ones in their baskets as well.

But none of the others seem to overcharge in quite the same grand scale as Sainsburys

Have to say, Sainsburys are just stupidly expensive.

Waitrose and M&S cost more, but you actually get nicer stuff and better service.

Tescos is a fair whack cheaper than Sainsburys and they actually have *stuff on the shelves* - it's hard for me to comment too much on the quality of Sainsbury's stock - I don't think I've seen any for the last couple of years.

I used to work in Sainsburys, things never seemed so bad then...but don't know if that's because I had lower standards (and staff discount...)

I use mysupermarket.com for my weekly Ocado shop and one of their tools is to compare your trolley with Tesco, Asda & Sainsbury. Without exception Sainsburys is always the most expensive. Asda is usually the cheapest but my past experience of them is that their fresh food & own label quality is cr*p so wouldn't go there anyway. I find the quality of Ocado/Waitrose food to be superb. So, going back to the OP, yes Sainsbury does appear more expensive that anyone else, as my small sampling shows, and I agree they so seem a bit up themselves in their advertising, but my local store is always fully stocked, always with polite staff and useful as an emergency shop mid-week. :D

I use Sainsbury's regularly as it's the closest supermarket to me. It's clean, tidy and the staff are helpful. The branch I use is generally very quiet (probably because no-one can afford to shop there lol) and it's got a lovely clean fish counter too. I personally think that the Sainsbury's basics products are all-round the best value range, and although I agree there are massive local variations, I also think that their fruit and veg is some of the freshest you can get (Waitrose is better, but that IS expensive and I don't live near one, sadly).

Asda is ok - it's cheap, but my local one is always a bit 'grubby' so that puts me off, and the fridges and freezers never seem to be cold enough. Also, I find that for good quality basics it's not that great. Their value fruit and veg is horrible and doesn't last, and I find their standard range fruit and veg to be a bit naff too. Tbh, the only reason that I go to Asda is because they do good offers on toiletries and household stuff. I also find that most of their special offers are generally for 'crap' - sweets, crisps, biscuits, booze etc, and although it's tempting I'd rather not buy that stuff. For the things I buy, I honestly don't find that much of a price difference between Sainsbury's and Asda and I'd rather buy stuff that I know is going to last that bit longer.

There is a Tesco near to me and I've been there once, but I found it awful - messy, dirty, hard to get to, full of sullen staff and the quality of the food was poor. So, for me, I like Sainsbury's as I think it's the 'best' supermarket in my area (and I'm definitely not loaded :)). I don't have a TV so can't comment on their advertising - I simply judge by where I'm comfortable buying food, I'd rather pay a few pence more for a cleaner shop with nicer staff.

My OH has on a number of ocassions tried to get me to switch from Sainsburys to ASDA. Whenever I've done so I've found all the own brand products matched price for price and Sainsbury's are infinitely superior. Equally, their basics range is best standard around.

Every supermarket has special offers on different things so unless you are prepared to compare your basket every week and shop in the cheapest place accordingly I think it probably all evens out over the course of a year.

There isn't any one supermarket that you can get everything you want in. That's why I do a trip to M&S, Waitrose & Sainsbury's each once a week. But, being retired, I have the time. Unfortunately I don't have any experience of Asda or Morrison, as we don't have either of them close by. London seems a bit short on Morrisons particularly.

But Southerngent, the remedy is completely in your hands - don't go to Sainsburys. I've managed to cut down my visits there, particularly since M&S have begun to do such great bargains and special offers.

I prefer sainsburys, it is a bit more expensive, but own brand stuff is v good quality, I also like m&s. Not too keen on tesco, our local one is very tatty and staff are not very helpful. (and I always miss out on the glitches:rotfl:)

If I had plenty of time I would probably shop around, but I haven't, so I don't!! There are plenty of places to shop, so if you don't like sainburys, pick somewhere else!

Sainsburys for us is by far and away the cheapest. Must really depend on what you buy. Personally find Asda and Tesco ALWAYS costs us more even though they often have some good offers on- they are rarely on things we want/use.

Items will never be the same price in all supermarkets- For the 2 items you listed, I could probably find several straight away that would cost me more if I bought them in another supermarket.

Also find Sainsburys well stocked and well staffed which cannot be said of our "local" tesco and Asda. We don't have a Morrisons near by so never really done a proper shop there.
