If a five year passport was issued in 1998, the extension would have to be applied for in 2003 and then would be valid as you said until 2008.

Or you just apply for the extension at any time before it was due to be 10 years old. You wouldn't have had to apply in 2003.

What I was trying to say was that there is no such thing as a 5 year passport with a free extension to 10 years now. All children's passports are valid for 5 years now.

Yes, which is why I said the rule only applies to those issued on or before 26th March 1998. Anything issued on or after 27th March 1998 would have to be renewed as opposed to extended.

    Have a look at this:

    http://www.passport.gov.uk/passport_child_extensions.asp

Looks like they changed the rules at some point in the last five years.

Was checking if this was continuing

    Hi,

not sure if this is mentioned elsewhere on the thread as I have not had time to check. But ... apply for a new passport now, pay current prices, and get the new chipped card. renewed three passports in June - all three are the new chipped ones. The introduction of the new passports is being phased. The Passports are being issued now (have small chip symbol on front cover) but the charges only go up in October.

Will apparently be compulsory for the states from Sept 08, so it may be worth considering if you have a large number of people to change over ...

No what they mean is that if you renew your passport within 9 months of its expiry date you will get a new passport that will be valid for 10 years PLUS however many months up to that expiry date so it could be 10yrs9mths.

If you renew a passport that has more than 9 months to run you will get a new 10 year passport and therefore lose some of the extra months.
How annoying - my passport is due to expire on 16 July 07 which means I'm 12 days shy of being able to benefit from the additional nine months andavoid the price increase

Not that I've read. Have you a link to where it says this? It's my understanding that passports will still be OK for the US as long as they are at least machine-readable.

    Hey all

My old passport expired on 9th May 2007. I sent it in for renewal on 29th July 2006 to avoid the price hike and get my full nine months' credit on the new one before I go on holiday next month.

My new passport was passed for printing on 3rd August and I received my new one today via so-called secure delivery. It's valid until 3rd May 2017, which is great!

It's also biometric and looks a lot different to my bf's newish (Feb last year) one - it's got blue pages for a start. Reminds me a bit of my first one!

Not getting the name changed when I get married - not worth the fee IMO!!! ;)

I must admit I'm not impressed with the delivery of mind! It was put through next doors letter box, and there's was put through mine!!!

Should anyone care.. apparently the £51 charge of an adult is broken down to the following:

    £14.02 - Processing the Application
    £9.65 - Consular help abroad
    £5.00 - Producing the passport
    £3.00 - Secure delivery
    £14.51 - Anti-Fraud initiatives
    £4.81 - Administration
    £51 - Total

Nor me - mine was posted through my own letterbox, but there was a freepost address on the back for people to send it back to if it had been delivered in error! Doesn't really instil much confidence!
