  • Didn't I read recently that even though new passports were due to be the bio-hazard (bio-metric, surely!) type, because Her Majesty has such a massive supply, she will continue to issue the old style / machine readable types until they have run out?

I wonder what "joy" this may create for travellers to the USA?

there is no means of applying online to get your passport done and pay the fees before tomorrows change.Too late for those trying to get it done. The online application is for the passport form and payment is after the forms have been signed and sent off

Blast! Mine runs out in January and I haven't renewed and didn't see this until this morning!
  • I sent mine Friday 29th September and payment was taken on Tuesday 3rd for £51 so i'm happy. Just hoping i have been issued a biometric one!!

I e-mailed the passport office about biometric passports and this is the response i got:

"All passport that are applied for through the post are biometric now. All passports applied through appointment services will be biometric as of the 26/10/06."

I just received my new biometric passport this morning, so managed to get the saving, but they didn't add on the remaining months (old one was to expire 10 March 07). Should I have received the extra 5 months? That's how I had read the introduction to this thread.

I did my application online, and sent £54 when I received it and sent back my old passport. I read that the fee was £51 and £3 for secure delivery, but when I received the passport they included a pamphlet entitled 'Essential information'. In that it breaks down the fee as follows:

    Processing the application £14.02
    Consular Help abroad £ 9.65
    Producing the passport £ 5.00
    Secure Delivery £ 3.00
    Anti Fraud intiatives £14.51
    Administration £ 4.82

Surely then I should be able to reclaim the £3.00 for secure delivery. am I correct?

What's the diffrence between 'processing' 'producing' and 'administration' ????

  • I wanted to say many thanks for this thread, as have now received both passports for 2 of my children.

They were due to run out in Aug 07, but decided that losing a few months out weighed the cost. So both returned with 9months added on- I am over the moon, at £68 rather than £90 . (Still costly though)So saved £22 thanks to you guys.

I also sent them in on the Monday? , well about 3/4 days before deadline, so am pleased that I managed to get the lower price!

    Cheers everyone!

Passport prices are going up on 5 October. An adult 10 year passport will increase to £66 and a child passport from £34 to £45.

You can renew your passport at any time, but they can only add 9 months validity from your old passport to your new one, so its reasonable cut off logic to say - this is only really worth doing now, to save the money, if you've roughly less than a year to go.

If you need to renew your passport within the next 9 months, you should do it before the end of September, as the cost jumps from £51 to £66. Also, for new applications. You can renew up to 9 months in advance, and you will be credited with any whole months remaining on your old passport.

I can't believe it costs the same amount to renew a passport and to apply 1st time !

Following the advice from Martin, I applied for the renewal of the passport and found that the fees are already up. According to Martin, the fees were going up in October.

They went up in October 2006, this is an old thread.
