As far as I know they stopped this a while ago when they introduced a different charge for a child's passport.

Yes, but only if the five-year passport was issued on or before 26th March 1998 and no details (eg name) have changed. Only one free extension is allowed.

I think this might be impossible. To be issued before March 1998 the passport would now be 8 years old;)

Yes, and the extension would make it valid until 2008. As far as I'm aware, just because a passport has passed its expiry date it doesn't mean you can't get a renewal or extension, because one of the criteria for renewing is to have held a passport at any time in the past. If you haven't already had one, you have to apply for the first time.

  • ok, well.... to those of you who have got married, don't bother taking your husband's name, keep your own. if you think it's bad now, wait until you get divorced, that's the nightmare!!

be an individual, not your husband's chattle. i know you think it's cute and exciting to be mrs so-n-so, but that feeling wont last long, ask anyone who's been married for ages... or divorced!

and keep an odd bank account in your maiden name... you'll be glad you did in years to come, it's somewhere to start stashing your money when things start to go wrong (don't be gullible and say it wont ever happen to you) and then at least he wont totally take you to the cleaners. wish i'd been given this advice.

    i'll not be caught again

If a five year passport was issued in 1998, the extension would have to be applied for in 2003 and then would be valid as you said until 2008. What I was trying to say was that there is no such thing as a 5 year passport with a free extension to 10 years now. All children's passports are valid for 5 years now.

I had a passport issued, in 2001 which was a five year child one - the PO said it would be free to extend as did the passport form.
Was checking if this was continuing

Fraid not. The earlier children's passports were valid for 10 years altogether but you had to extend them after 5 years. They then changed to the child's passport which is only 5 years and is cheaper than an adult passport. My son's passport was issued in 2001 and expired in March 2006 - he did not get a free 5 year extension.
