Sorry, what's the problem with being listed on b4usearch.com? Like you say details are on the electoral roll anyway.
No, details were on the electoral roll. Nowadays we can opt out of having our details published on the publically available list, but we've only had the option to opt out for the last few years. This means that details from before that time, which for a lot of people are still largely correct, are on their database and can be searched for by anyone.

In the fight against identity fraud and other crimes committed via intrusion of privacy, it will be a lot more effective for the Government to do something about sites such as these, rather than wasting billions on yet another failed IT project IMHO.

    Thanks for the reminder.

I've had the forms to renew mine for over 4 weeks now, so I'll def fill them in and send them off. The forms state that they will add full months onto your new passport, up to a max of 9 months (if you don't want to read the whole article).

Can anyone help me this one? My son, who is 10, is currently on my passport, I am renewing mine (and applying for his first passport) soon, as hiswill be for only 5 years what happens when it needs renewing, he will then be 15 which is too young for a 10 year passport, but will only be able to use a new 5 year passport for 1-2 years, is my thinking on this correct or is there an allowance for such things? I am wondering if I should put off applying for his first passport for as long as possible? but then end up paying the increased fee ??
    cheers

I spose that's up to you, but were you really only going to use your 10-year passports for that one trip? Even if you only went on holiday once every two years (ie five times over the life of the passport) it would cost you £10 each per trip.

I'm not saying they're cheap, I just think your example is a little extreme.

Also, apart from travelling, lots of employers now ask to see your passport as proof that you're entitled to work in the UK, so they come in handy for other stuff too. I'm not saying this is right because not everyone has a passport, but people still ask because it's an easy way of establishing someone's citizenship.

On another note, I am soon to get a Canadian passport (my choice entirely) and theirs cost $87 for five years - plus you have to get your pics done by a professional photographer - no photo booth pics allowed! Nowhere near as good value, and Canadians living in Canada generally don't holiday abroad as much as Europeans as they get less annual leave and they're not near as many countries.

I have several South African friends and, on top of flights, accommodation and passports they have to pay for visas for almost everywhere they want to travel to. British people are extremely lucky in that they don't even have to think about this most of the time. Of course we need to buy visas for some places but not for the EU, Canada, the US (usually), HK, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand... the list goes on.

So us Brits really aren't that badly off :D

I actually decided not to take my children abroad on holiday this year because the cost of renewing 5 passports, combined with photos and postage was going to add £220 onto the price of our holiday.

That would even mean that a cheap day trip to France, where we get a ferry trip for £30, would end up costing me £250! Ridiculous.

    Hi

He can't apply for an adult one when he is under 16, so it's either apply for another child one when he's 15 (which would expire when he's 20) or have a year's break and apply for an adult one when he's 16 (which would expire when he's 26).

Jumbo passports have more pages in than normal ones (48 as opposed to 32 IIRC) :D

A quick look on the passport offices website revealed their new pricing structure.

    Postal Fast Track Premium
    Adult £66 (£51) £91 (£77.50) £108 (£96.50)
    Child £45 (£34) £80 (£70) £93 (£83)
    Jumbo £77 (£62.50) £97 (£87) £114.50 (£104.50)

My question is : price for "Jumbo"? Do they get many elephants travelling abroad these days?! (Or is it a seperate price for overweight or tall people?!)

When I married in 1999 my passport didn't expire till late 2001 not prepared to pay for just changing the name for the 2 years left on it, we just booked subsequent holidays in my maiden name. It was the passport office that told us we could do this, but all holiday documentation (eg tickets, booking forms) had to be the same name as on my passport.

Doing this gave us an added advantage when Master Spendless came along in 2000 and we holidayed abroad twice that year it meant we just got him a passport we weren't paying for a new one for me too. Now all 4 of us are due to renew our passports in different years so not one large hit at once.

My husband has just had his Canadian Passport renewed by the Canadian Embassy in London and he used 'photo booth' photo's with no problem. Not seen anything on the website or application forms about professional photo's, unless we missed it.

I WILL NOT be renewing my passport and as I can't go out of the UK I'll be holidaying here! Total amount "saved" £54.

What really gets me is that you don't need to show your passport to go from France to Germany. But we need to show ours to go from the UK to France!
