One thing that totally confused me, was, after having to go to Peterborough twice as they gave me the wrong info by phone and letter and I didn't have enough details with me on the first trip. When I finally did get the passports and took the kids to Malta, not everyone has passports anyway. Apparently it was something to do with the "marriage" between Malta and Britain and if you had other ID a passport was not needed. Why wasn't I given this information before I spent £140 (not including petrol and parking) on 2 childrens passports ??

I am getting married next july 07 and my passport runs out in July as well. so I am going to have to renew and change my name at the same time to save paying the fee twice.
Can I renew before October and save money or will I have to wait til 3 months before my wedding?

Me and my boyfriend are sending our passports for renewal this month. We completely disagree with the ID card scheme and renewing now means we have 10 years to consider our options (such as emigration or extreme anarchy of some kind :D ) if the government keeps up with this ludicrous scheme!

We are getting married in 2008, so it looks like my passport will have to stay in my maiden name after that as I'm not risking changing it if they're going to force me to go onto the Identity Register! :(
  • a passport renewel costs how much now? I can't believe its gone up over 500% since my last one in 97. Well thats just priced me into a lifetime of Butlins holidays and weekends in skegness.

Thank god I'm not the only one! Been married over 2 years, still have my maiden name on my passport and bank account!

I still have 6 years left on my passport, if I change my name on my passport, do I get a new 10 year one or one for 16 years?

I changed my maiden name on my passport to married name back in 2001. I'd had the passport 5 years and the 'new' one that they charged just to change my name was for the remaining 5 years only.
Just renewed it in April, so I've got another 10 years to go

I have recently applied to renew my passport which was due to expire at the end of March 07. There is a condition in the application rules that say that you cannot apply any earlier than 9 months out, so I had to wait a few weeks until I reached the 9 month threshold.

So don't rush out to apply if your passport is due for renewal in 12 months' time!

It is true that they do credit you back with any unused time though.

Also, TRETS 77 is right in their reply re the marriage passport renewal. When my wife did hers, she got it about a month before the wedding, but it was post dated to come into effect on our wedding day. As we were paying for everything we couldn't afford to go away before then anyway, so the loss of use for that month or so did not cause any problems.

The UK Passport service website says that you can renew at any time, but only a maximum of 9 months will be credited....

    http://www.passport.gov.uk/passport_renewing_eligible.asp
    Am I eligible?
You can apply to renew if:

your last passport was a standard adult 10-year passport and
you still have your last passport and
your passport is not damaged and
you do not need to change your name or national status
    and

    your passport is full or
    it has run out or
it will run out within the next nine months.*
If we issued your old passport for a restricted period (for one year or less), please call the Passport Adviceline before you apply.

If you want your new passport to show a different name to your current passport you should follow the instructions for amending a passport. Please call our Adviceline on 0870 521 0410 if we issued your old passport for a restricted period (one year or less). The Premium (one-day) service is not available for passport extensions.

If you were previously included as a child on someone else’s passport you now need to apply for an adult passport.

    * You do not have to wait until your passport is nearly expired to renew it, but we can add no more than 9 months unexpired validity from the old passport to the new one. You can renew your passport whenever you wish, but you must pay the full fee and no refund can be given for the unexpired validity in the old passport.

So now I am confused about when you can renew as this contradicts other peoples experiences!

Need to renew OH's passport and as we're going away at the end of September want to do it ASAP, but don't want to end up passportless

    Thanks,
    Rach

A quick look on the passport offices website revealed their new pricing structure.

    Postal Fast Track Premium
    Adult £66 (£51) £91 (£77.50) £108 (£96.50)
    Child £45 (£34) £80 (£70) £93 (£83)
    Jumbo £77 (£62.50) £97 (£87) £114.50 (£104.50)

My question is : price for "Jumbo"? Do they get many elephants travelling abroad these days?! (Or is it a seperate price for overweight or tall people?!)
