Can someone clarify something for me. If my passport runs out end of May, if I renew it in September, I will get a new passport running for 10 years? But if I renew it in August, they will not give me a new 10 year passport but only a 10 month one?

No what they mean is that if you renew your passport within 9 months of its expiry date you will get a new passport that will be valid for 10 years PLUS however many months up to that expiry date so it could be 10yrs9mths.

If you renew a passport that has more than 9 months to run you will get a new 10 year passport and therefore lose some of the extra months.

Can i still travel on my old passport under my maiden name or is that against the law as i really thinks its sick of the government to make me pay extra to change my name 9 (i got married 4 yrs ago) i havnt got any holidays booked and havnt been abroad since my honeymoon (couldnt be bothered to change my passport then) but should i pay to change it before the price change or can i use its remaining 5 yrs under my maiden name?

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
  • That is REALLY unfair, making people pay for a new passport just to register a name change after getting married. Surely it could be classed as sex discrimination - after all, how many men do you know who've changed their names following marriage? Can we sue the passport office / government for this? There's no charge for changing the name on your driving licence, bank accounts etc. - why should passports be any different?

I got married just under a year ago and changed names but haven't been abroad since (except on honeymoon, for which my old passport was fine), and my passport expires this month so I have to get a new on anyway. However, I'm also due to give birth this month so I doubt if I'll be leaving the country again for at least a year or so, so I'm undecided whether to dive in and renew before the price rise or just to wait until I'm actually going to NEED a new passport.

It has been delayed till 2nd quarter of next year ( i know coz im waiting to start my promotion there!) all first time adult appications will require an interview to be arranged at one of the 72 offices that will be open nationwide

And you should also be aware that at some point in the future ALL applications to renew a passport will mean a trip to one of the centres to 'prove' that you are who you say you are... you won't just be able to send off your old passport with a cheque, you'll need to take time off work and be interviewed. Oh, and the price will go up again, to pay for all this...

although my passport has 3 years on it, I'm renewing it right now, to avoid all this for as long as possible.

I was under the impression the interviews were only if applying for a NEW passport and not for just renewing it. Could you point me in the right direction re interviews for renewing passports?

I think they also combine it with scanning your iris' and taking your fingerprints, so you'll go back to work nice and inky!! :rotfl:

^ That's what I've heard anyway, and then apparently its all stored on one of the government's all seeing all knowing computer datbases until the meteors hit and doomsday come. So I might renew before then just to stay off it just to be a pain.

I got my information on it from the link below, though its from the perspective of the Anti-ID Card campaign, so bear that in mind when you're reading it.

Thank god I'm not the only one! Been married over 2 years, still have my maiden name on my passport and bank account!

I still have 6 years left on my passport, if I change my name on my passport, do I get a new 10 year one or one for 16 years?

There is no legal requirement to change your name at all when you get married. You can travel as much as you like on your maiden name passport so long as you remember to book your tickets and travel in the same name and not your married one!

yay, coz I get married in July 08, but my passport runs out July next
t year, so I would have had to pay for 2 new passports, but now I don't as long as I book everything under my maiden name. Can't wait for the honeymoon!

The down side is that I have to pay an extra £15 coz it will be November when I get to renew! Pants! lol.
  • Not much use for you in the circumstances, I suppose, but perhaps a useful warning for serious money savers. I suggested to my intended that she keep her maiden name, as I wasn't all that bothered about the name change stuff and she already had kids with her surname. It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but now there's money involved. A financial penalty for changing your name when you marry? What's the world coming to?
