  • Just to remind you all that you or your parents/grandparents can get Free Passports

In recognition of the sacrifices made by World War II veterans and civilians, every British Citizen born on or before 2 September 1929 will no longer have to pay for a UK passport.

Many veterans have already received free one-year passports to enable them to revisit battlefields in the 60th anniversary year of the D-Day landings. The Home Secretary announced earlier this year that this would be extended to cover everyone that played a part in the war effort, who will now receive free passports for life.

Brigadier Ian Townsend, Secretary General of the Royal British Legion, said:

"The Royal British Legion warmly welcomes this new scheme which, through the generosity of the Government, will enable all those who lived through and remember World War II to travel the world and visit places they may remember, countries which were liberated by the Allies, or beyond."

It's a bit tight seeing as some people will be too ill from old age to travel abroad at 77+, or even still, not with us. None of my G'parents lived past that age.

Bring in higher saleries to go with inflation!

yay, coz I get married in July 08, but my passport runs out July this year, so I would have had to pay for 2 new passports, but now I don't as long as I book everything under my maiden name. Can't wait for the honeymoon!

The down side is that I have to pay an extra £15 coz it will be November when I get to renew! Pants! lol.

Probably no good for you, since your renewal is 2008, but you can apply for a postdated passport up to 9 months (I believe) before your wedding and to be in your new name. Downside is that your old passport is cancelled and so you can't travel until after your wedding. All you need is to fill in the standard form as well as a post dated form (I think PD2, with accompanying notes PD1) that is available on the passport office website. You need to have the wedding arranged since the minister/registrar has to complete a section of PD2 confirming the wedding is booked.

Soz made a mistake up there, passport runs out next july (07). That might be an idea. Thanks.
  • Woohoo! Just looked out my passport and found that it expires in April! I can apply for a new one now, get the cheaper rate AND get the extra nine months! All before I go away in October! Better get it sorted out now then!

Thanks very much for letting us know about this!

my wife has just changed her passport too from her maiden name . absolute bloody rip off for one detail £54 quid for 6 letters a bllody disgrace. they should do this free or least discounted . we got married in states in may and she applyed for the BMI card under her married name when we got back so no new passport, no free flight.

if you have any ambitions of going to USA in the next ten years get your passport renewed NOW as they have extended the visa waiver program for a extra year. your machine readable passport will then be good for it,s life for entry in to america. we had this last year my then finacee's passport ran out in 10 months and she had to hot foot it to peterborough to get in before 26/10/2005 deadline so her new passport would be good for entry in the USA. we now again have had to make sure her new married name passport gets in before the extended October 2006 deadline so she will be okay on the machine readable one for 10 years and avoid the Biometric passport cost and hassel.

however shelling out £54 quid twice in the space of 10 months STINGS but there is now money saving route round it. if we want that free BMI flight next year.

it will be the the case soon enough that all passports new or renwals require a trip to a far away office for a interview. how much is that gonna cost us ???
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:
  • A friend of mine who works in the House of Lords said that next year they intend bringing into force the biometric passport complete with iris scan. This may cost up to £100.

If you renew now then they can't get even more money from you for another 10 years, plus personal data that quite frankly I'd rather they didn't have.
  • mine expires in july 2007, going away in may 07 so might renew before october and save a few pounds.think i might need to have 6months left on passport anyway to travel(will have to check), so might be better off anyway.

I got re-married 4 years ago and I still have my passport in my previous name but it also has my daughter on it who is now 18 and has decided to go to France in January. So I might as well get both passports sorted in one go and have her removed from mine and change my name.

I want to be microchipped like my cat :rotfl: then I'll never have to look for my passport ever again... we've just moved and I haven't found it yet!
