I appreciate that is your opinion, but legally (which i believe is what is important) I highly doubt theft could be proved, unless the OP could prove that the Co-op had not passed the note on to BOE or the police.

Have a read through the theft act 1968 as it clearly defines what constitutes theft. The member of staff was obligied to retain what they believed was a counterfeit

Surely it is down to the CO OP to prove that they took the note to the relevant body for validation once the OP has proved the note was taken.

My understanding that the FOI Act allows you the right to the footage of any CCTV camera in a public place that you have liegitmate reason for wishing to view. I am pretty sure that applies to shops as well. As they will have a camera over looking the till area you should get something showing the event.

Very intresting thread. There are obviously problems with the procedures with dealing with counterfeit currency, I suggest the OP should involve her Member of Parliment, both to put more pressure on the co-op to take the matter seriously and to get the issue mor widely recognised.

That is true. if it goes that far i can obtain footage if i was going to be really difficult. They have never denied taking the note just refused to say they had in other means apart from verbally via the store managers.

Be careful, footage is only kept for so long before the tapes are wiped.. some places keep footage for a month, but some as little as 14 days.

If they change their mind and deny knowledge of the incident you may be stuck.

Nothing stops you requesting the footage now as a safe guard

I am a little confused about this as it was NOT you that passed over the alleged fake £20 note, yet you expect the Co-op to deal with you! Has your friend actually given you permission to act on her behalf?

Hmmm, I think not is all that meets the eye then, even to you!

Why? Don't quite follow, is this because i'm dealing with it?

I am helping her out as she isn't very well educated on such topics as consumer law etc and can't speak like I can.

Big deal. I also helped my boyfriend at the bank this weekend because he got tounge tied when trying to talk about a bank charge. I took over and got to returned.

Some people don't like speaking to others and connot get accross what they want as they don't have the knowledge/confidence etc

I can do it well, so people ask my help which i kindly give.

  • misssarahleigh dont rise to it.. sadly there are people on this forum that kerb crawl for an argument.

You do not need her permission to ask for the footage if you were present as unless your Casper you would be on the footage too

Your a very sweet friend who is clearly sticking up for someone to shy to deal with it.. good on you
